LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA. Dreamland Gran Canaria delivered a dominant performance to defeat La Laguna Tenerife 102-83 in a historic Canary Islands derby in the Liga Endesa. The team coached by Ché García reached triple digits in an ACB derby against their rivals for the first time and took a vital step in their fight for survival thanks to a balanced effort led by Caleb Homesley Wong, Metu, Brussino, and Brandon Jefferson.
Dreamland Gran Canaria took the court with superior intensity and showed from the start a completely different image from other matches this season. The yellow team found offensive rhythm quickly and began to punish La Laguna Tenerife with fast transitions and excellent three-point shooting.
Wong was the standout performer early on. The shooting guard was nearly flawless and led the offensive onslaught of a Gran Canaria team that kept growing until reaching a twenty-point advantage (51-31) following a 2+1 from Robertson.
Ché García's team dominated the game through collective energy and offensive aggression. Contributions from Metu, Brussino, and Eric Vila allowed the home team to play with great confidence, while La Laguna Tenerife also suffered from the absence of Marcelinho Huertas, who had to leave the game due to physical discomfort.
Despite the yellow team's dominance, the visiting team found some life thanks to the offensive talent of Patrick Mills. The point guard was the main problem for the home defense and kept the visitors in the game during several stretches of the contest.
With the score at 66-52, Ché García found a new solution with the entry of Brandon Jefferson. The point guard changed the offensive rhythm of Dreamland Gran Canaria and forced La Laguna Tenerife to modify its defensive priorities, creating more space for the big men and continuously punishing from beyond the arc.
The three-point accuracy of Jefferson and Brussino again extended the lead. Dreamland Gran Canaria quickly recovered advantages close to twenty points and closed the third quarter with a commanding 79-61 that put the derby firmly in hand.
The tension finally exploded at the start of the fourth quarter. Fran Guerra was disqualified following an action on Robertson with nine minutes still remaining and the score showing a clear 83-63 advantage for the yellow team.
Far from provoking a visiting comeback, the action definitively broke the game open. Dreamland Gran Canaria continued to punish from three-point range and extended the lead to 96-66 as the crowd began celebrating one of the most dominant victories in recent Canary Islands derby history.
The yellow team finished reaching 102 points, something never previously achieved in an ACB derby against La Laguna Tenerife.
With this victory, Dreamland Gran Canaria secured a crucial win in the fight for survival and regained confidence in the decisive stretch of the Liga Endesa. For their part, La Laguna Tenerife suffered a heavy defeat in a game completely dominated by their rival from start to finish.
