LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA. Gran Canaria defeated Girona 100-90 in Liga Endesa play, securing their first victory under head coach Néstor "Che" García and ending an eight-game losing streak. The yellow team responded at Gran Canaria Arena with evident improvements in defense, rebounding, and free throws, led by a decisive Nico Brussino.
The victory represents important relief for Gran Canaria, who had not won since February 14 and needed an immediate response following the coaching change from Jaka Lakovic. The island team found solutions on a night of character and resilience to smile again in Liga Endesa.
The game started poorly for the home team. Although Albicy and Brussino opened the scoring with accurate three-pointers, Girona responded with a strong start from beyond the arc. A powerful 0-15 run sent the visitors to 9-20 and filled Gran Canaria with doubts in the opening minutes. The first quarter ended with an eight-point deficit and poor feelings for the yellow team.
In the second period, the reaction appeared. Che García's team tightened their defense, improved their rebounding, and began to grow little by little. Nico Brussino ignited the arena with two consecutive three-pointers, one of them from deep range and right at the shot clock buzzer, forcing Girona to call timeout at 29-32. Shortly after, Caleb Homesley Wong completed a 2+1 to return the advantage to Gran Canaria (40-39).
The third quarter was frenetic. Girona imposed a high pace, with quick transitions and short attacks, a scenario that benefited the Catalan team at times. In that constant exchange, Hildreth stood out, very accurate in the most delicate moments. The visitors regained control and entered the final period with a three-point lead.
There emerged the best local version. Wong opened the quarter with a 2+1 and a three-pointer that returned energy to Gran Canaria (70-69). The game entered a tense, even phase loaded with fouls, where each possession had double value.
Five minutes from the end, a three-pointer by Tobey put it at 84-79 and marked the beginning of the definitive breakaway. Gran Canaria defended with much more firmness, dominated the small details, and was reliable from the free throw line, posting an excellent 32 of 37.
With the game still open, the leader appeared. Nico Brussino nailed two consecutive three-pointers in the final stretch to open a definitive thirteen-point lead with less than a minute to play. Gran Canaria closed out the 100-90 final and left behind weeks of suffering.
The yellow team regains breathing room in Liga Endesa and hopes this victory is the starting point for a comeback in the decisive stretch of the championship.
Girona, competitive for many minutes, left empty-handed despite their strong start and will need to seek an immediate reaction in the next matchday.
