The opening was marked by defensive dominance from both teams. The first minutes were played at a controlled pace, with defenses imposing themselves on the offenses. Unicaja found some offensive fluidity first and managed to open a small early lead (4-10), taking advantage of their intensity on both ends of the court.

Surne Bilbao's response came from the bench. The entry of the second unit, with Darrun Hilliard and Bassala Bagayoko providing energy, allowed the game to be evened out. Unicaja continued scoring with relative ease and reached 17-23 with two minutes left in the first quarter. However, Jaume Ponsarnau's squad elevated their defensive level in that final stretch and exploited the interior game with Emir Sulejmanovic Krampelj, Tryggvi Hlinason, and the penetrations of Melwin Pantzar. Three free throws from Adam Smith Jaworski allowed Surne Bilbao to close the first quarter ahead (26-23).

The game remained very tight in the second quarter. Unicaja went back in front after a three-point play from Kameron Taylor Audige and a layup from Olek Balcerowski (26-28), but Surne Bilbao responded quickly with free throws from Pantzar and a basket from Hilliard to regain control (30-26).

The back-and-forth continued for several minutes, with both teams alternating scoring runs. James Webb III kept Unicaja in it with a spectacular offensive stretch, scoring eleven consecutive points that allowed the Málaga side to tie the score (37-37). However, in the final stretch before halftime, Surne Bilbao reasserted their defense. A three-pointer from Tomas Petrasek at the buzzer left the home team with a seven-point advantage at the break (49-42).

Surne Bilbao came out of the locker room with greater energy and pulled away again. A three-pointer from Darrun Hilliard, a spectacular block from Tryggvi Hlinason on Audige, and a three-point play from Petrasek extended the lead to 55-44, forcing Unicaja to respond.

Ibon Navarro's squad answered with a 1-7 run that tightened the score again (56-53). At that point the game entered a phase of greater offensive tension for the Bilbao side, with Hilliard taking many shots while his teammates accumulated some misses.

Surne Bilbao found breathing room with a key play from Aleix Font. From there, the Basque team built their advantage from the free-throw line: two from Frey, four from Jaworski, and two more from Bagayoko extended the gap to 68-58. Free-throw accuracy was one of the determining factors in the game.

A layup from Melwin Pantzar pushed the lead to 72-60 and unleashed enthusiasm at Bilbao Arena. Surne Bilbao's good moment continued with a post basket from Petrasek that left the score at 76-63 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The final stretch of the Surne Bilbao-Unicaja game had a controversial episode when Pantzar provoked the ejection of James Webb III, until that moment the most productive player for the visitors, after an incident that ended with the power forward sent off. Although Unicaja tried to briefly respond, defensive problems continued to punish the Málaga squad.

Surne Bilbao took advantage of the situation to close out the game. Two consecutive three-pointers from Margiris Normantas extended the lead to 84-68 and left the game practically decided.

Darrun Hilliard, Surne Bilbao's leading scorer with 18 points, sealed the victory with another three-pointer that put the score at 89-70 with less than three minutes remaining. Melwin Pantzar delivered a complete performance against his future team with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a rating of 22, while the interior work of Tryggvi Hlinason and the accuracy of Petrasek also proved key.

Surne Bilbao thus adds their fifteenth victory in Liga Endesa, which allows them to remain fully in contention for playoff positions in the ACB standings.

With this 90-74 victory over Unicaja, Surne Bilbao closes a very positive week following the renewal of Jaume Ponsarnau and their recent step forward in European competition, while the Málaga squad loses a direct opportunity in the fight for the top positions in Liga Endesa.
