San Pablo Burgos' Comeback Falls Short in Thessaloniki (93-80)

Recoletas Salud San Pablo Burgos lost control in the first half. On the road against Aris Thessaloniki in the second matchday of Eurocup Group A, the Spanish side went into halftime down 23 points (53-30). They won the second half by ten and got within twelve in the fourth quarter, but the comeback came too late: 93-80 and a first European loss after opening with a win against Cedevita Olimpija.

A strong start that unraveled quickly

Burgos began well. A three-pointer by Chase Audige put them ahead (2-5), but the advantage was short-lived. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl led Aris' response, with Charalampopoulos, Toliopoulos, and Thanasis Antetokounmpo as supporting cast, and the Greeks opened up the first gap. Rubén Guerrero, DJ Steward, Audige, and Koprivica kept Burgos in it for a while, until Aris went on a 14-0 run between the end of the first quarter and the start of the second (28-14).

A first half to forget

The second quarter was even worse. Burgos couldn't find a way to break through the Greek defense and Robinson-Earl dominated the paint. Nenad Dimitrijevic and Adam Mokoka extended the lead to 43-24, and although Audige and Steward tried to stem the bleeding, two plays by Matthew Morgan and one by E.J. Liddell left it at 53-30 at halftime. In ten minutes, Aris had scored 25 points on Burgos, who managed only 16.

The comeback, led by Audige

A basket by Morgan opened the second half with the maximum lead (56-32, +24), but from there the game changed. Audige took the team on his shoulders and, with Balsa Koprivica in the paint, cut the deficit to 16 (61-45). Steward and Sekou Doumbouya maintained the momentum and Dani Díez joined in to close the third quarter at 69-55. Burgos won that stretch by nine (16-25).

Twelve points and no more

The fourth quarter started with another local run that pushed the score to 80-57. That's when Burgos showed their best version. Doumbouya and Díez led a 3-14 run that got the Greeks within twelve (83-71) with time remaining. Aris called for calm and found answers in Charalampopoulos, Toliopoulos, and especially Dimitrijevic, the game's leading scorer with 21 points. Steward and Doumbouya kept scoring until the end, and a three-pointer by Raúl Lobaco closed it at 93-80.

Audige finished with 25 points, Doumbouya with 18, and Steward with 13. Burgos returns to the Liga Endesa on Sunday (18:00) on the road against Surne Bilbao.
