Breogán-Unicaja and a 3-1 Showdown in La Laguna, Matchday 5

Por ·

Real Madrid arrives at matchday five as the only undefeated team, but the top of the Liga Endesa is tightly bunched: five teams follow with three wins and one loss. Two of them face off in La Laguna, and two others have much at stake in the most attractive games of the weekend, in Lugo and at the Roig Arena.

Breogán's 100-point performance against Unicaja

The game of the matchday takes place Sunday at 18:00 at the Pazo dos Deportes. Río Breogán is the team in form: they have surpassed 100 points in all four of their games, something no ACB team has ever done before, and they have Francis Alonso, the hottest player in the league. Their only loss came in Andorra, without Dominik Mavra, who has already returned to normal training after a high-fever flu. They will face a Unicaja team that arrives in good form after winning in Pardubice in the BCL, but with three important absences: Tyson Pérez, Yannick Nzosa, and Alberto Díaz. With them out, Ibon Navarro's team will have to stop an offense averaging 107 points with less rotation than usual.

Two 3-1 teams face off in La Laguna

Sunday at 13:00 (12:00 in the Canary Islands), La Laguna Tenerife hosts Monbus Obradoiro in a clash between two of the teams chasing Madrid. Jaka Lakovic's team comes off a 12-point comeback in Frankfurt in the EuroCup and a win over Baskonia in the Liga Endesa, though they remain without Rokas Giedraitis, who has a long-term injury. Obradoiro, which won in Burgos last matchday, will be without Olle Lundqvist and has just parted ways with Michael Caicedo.

A battered Baskonia visits the Roig Arena

Valencia Basket and Kosner Baskonia face off Sunday at 17:00 in very different situations. Valencia, at 2-2, has its full roster available. Baskonia (3-1) arrives heavily depleted: they lost in Athens to Panathinaikos after competing until the final minute, Tadas Sedekerskis suffered an injury in that game and could have a muscle tear, and their coach warned that he only has nine players available, and they are also "exhausted."

Madrid defends the perfect record and Barcelona seeks to continue

Real Madrid closes out the matchday Sunday at 19:00 in Lleida. They arrive at 4-0 and after winning in Belgrade against Maccabi with 21 three-pointers, though without Gabriel Deck and Usman Garuba. iLERNA Lleida (1-3) is in a worse situation: Atoumane Diagne is out, Adrià Rodríguez will be sidelined for about three months with a wrist fracture, and John Shurna, Dani García, and Mark Hughes are dealing with physical issues.

Barcelona opens Saturday night (21:00) against Casademont Zaragoza, one of the teams in the 3-1 group. The Blaugrana come off a win in Milan, though they remain without Darío Brizuela and Yoan Makoundou. Zaragoza will be without Jilson Bango and Trae Bell-Haynes, who will rest as a precaution.

The rest of the matchday

Saturday starts at 18:00 at the Nou Congost, where Kids&Us Manresa, still winless in the league, seeks their first victory against Recoletas Salud San Pablo Burgos (1-3). Manresa gets back Lukasz Kolenda, but will be without Timmy Allen and Rafa Villar. At 19:30, UCAM Murcia and Leyma Coruña, both at 1-3, play to escape the bottom of the standings. Sunday at 12:00, FIATC Girona hosts Asisa Joventut with four absences, in a game where Gregor Glas could make his debut, and Surne Bilbao faces MoraBanc Andorra, which could recover Rafa Luz.
