Two of the main promotion contenders in Primera FEB showed no signs of disappointing in their league debuts. Fran Guerra and Ingus Jakovics set the bar high from the start in a competition where Cajasol Coto Córdoba secured their first-ever home victory
Primera FEB couldn't have had a better start to the season, which kicked off with a thrilling Balearic derby decided by the slimmest of margins, with Dezayne Mingo scoring the first game-winner of the campaign. The perfect prelude to a matchday in which Cajasiete Gran Canaria would debut with tremendous force and Iberolea Palencia would match that opening statement with a solid road victory in Albacete.
The calendar draw had set up a vibrant Balearic showdown to begin the season, and it couldn't have had a better outcome on opening night. Fibwi Mallorca Palma made things really difficult for their rival in a night where Dorde Simeunovic scored the first basket of the season before the hosts went on a run that seemed to give Palmer Mallorca momentum. Those minutes allowed the home team to take control of a game they tried to break open in the third quarter thanks to their outside shooting, but the solid play of Jaume Lobo with six consecutive points proved vital to put his team ahead before the final possession. In that last play, the home scoreboard gave the final ball to Dezayne Mingo, who scored the first game-winner of the season with 7" remaining to secure the victory at home (95-94).
Saturday afternoon brought the first victory in the category for Cajasol Coto Córdoba, which thrilled its fans with the result, but especially with their play. Gonzalo Rodríguez's team managed to maintain continuity with the work "inherited" from last season in a matchup where Caja Rural Zamora showed good principles but couldn't sustain their game for the full 40 minutes (72-57). Something similar happened to Grupo Alega Cantabria, which started the season with a victory but had to work hard to overcome Bàsquet Menorca, who displayed clear game concepts and where Hansel Atencia made a big debut in the category while Kyle Greeley proved very effective around the basket (69-68).
But the biggest thrills of the afternoon came from a prime spot where Cajasiete Gran Canaria kicked off the season with an absolute display of dominance and a stellar Fran Guerra. All of this to score 108 points and win by a total of 39 over Alimerka Oviedo, who competed with character during the first quarter but got overwhelmed defensively in the second, surrendering all hopes of victory (108-69). A Gran Canaria start very similar to what Iberolea Palencia experienced, though on the road. Natxo Lezkano's team made the return to the category miserable for Bueno Arenas Albacete, who tried everything possible but could do little to turn their fortune around (69-95).
One team that couldn't maintain that winning momentum was Covirán Granada, which started their game with an spectacular dunk from Jovan Kljajic, but couldn't overcome the perimeter superiority of Inveready Askatuak's players, where Gaizka Maiza shone brightly to surprise the Granada side and secure their first win of the season (76-82). A first victory that Ourense Baloncesto wouldn't let slip away at home, with Marc García already acting as spiritual leader in a game where Martín Fernández joined the party to finish neutralizing Grupo Ureta Tizona from the perimeter (91-71).
The matchday was completed Sunday morning with the return to action of Movistar Estudiantes after falling short of promotion in last season's Final Four. A game that served as a tribute and recognition to recently retired Jayson Granyer, and where debutant Insolac Caja 87 surprised early with a strong opening performance. After scoring their first point in the category from Izaw-Bolavie (SEE VIDEO), the Seville team offered very dynamic play to reach halftime ahead. Those hopes dissolved throughout the second half thanks to Micah Speight, who delivered his best version from the point guard position, finding the basket with fluidity to turn the scoreboard around. All of this so the season's first victory wouldn't slip away, starting the campaign with a smile (78-65).
