Cajasiete Gran Canaria aims for ambitious goals in Primera FEB this season, and Bruno Savignani's squad will face their first major test on Sunday with a visit to Movistar Estudiantes, who co-lead the competition undefeated. The matchday concludes a weekend that begins Friday night with HLA Alicante, the other league leader, traveling to face a resurgent Grupo Ureta Tizona Burgos.
The magic of Marques Townes, the elegance of Joe Cremo, the power of Fran Guerra... These will be just some of the weapons Cajasiete Gran Canaria brings to Movistar Arena on Sunday to challenge one of the main promotion contenders, an unstoppable Movistar Estudiantes that will defend its unbeaten status with the goal of opening up a gap.
Only two teams remain undefeated after five matchdays of Primera FEB, and both will be responsible for opening and closing the weekend. The action begins when HLA Alicante takes the court at El Plantío to test the reaction of the Burgos squad. Grupo Ureta Tizona picked up two wins last week across league and cup play, learning how to win in a competition where they continue fighting for their primary objective of survival. To do so, Denís Ponbar's squad will have to work hard on defense to shut down the Alicante offense in a matchup that pits the league's worst defense (96.1 ppg) against the second-best offense (90 ppg). A real opportunity for the Burgos side to make a statement against a rival looking to secure a sixth straight win and maintain their unbeaten record ahead of the next FIBA Window. With added intrigue from Arnau Parrado's return to his former home and the reunion of Gerard Jofresa and Sebastian Aris with their ex-teammates.
And depending on what happens there, fans will view the matchday's closing game differently. A game already full of storylines that will pit unbeaten Movistar Estudiantes against a Cajasiete Gran Canaria ready to aim for everything. The first major battle of the season between two promotion contenders that will be truly valuable for positioning, but not decisive. A real threat for Toni Ten's men led by two former players: Fran Guerra, developed in their academy and serving as the team's primary offensive reference, and Christian Díaz, who has been sidelined by injury in recent weeks and could return to the court on Sunday in a visit to his former team. But the real individual duel will come from beyond the arc with the three-point shootout between Omar Silverio and Marques Townes that will surely decide the game.
In between, Saturday afternoon will bring another test for a Covirán Granada that seems to be gaining momentum as it recovers players, and especially for their opponent, a Partizán de Fuenlabrada that grows week after week and arrives after securing their first win last weekend. We'll also see the season's first opportunity for sporting revenge with Iberolea Palencia returning to Torrelavega ten days after their Copa España FEB elimination. A matchup that Grupo Alega Cantabria will enter with point guard Guillém Ferrando as a question mark and after suffering their first loss of the season in Albacete. For this reason, Lolo Encinas' squad aims to maintain their unbeaten home record to stay in line with the leaders.
An afternoon in which Bueno Arenas Albacete, the first team to beat the Cantabrians, will hit the road to test their luck in one of those important matchups for their interests. A clash where David Varela will try to build on the great performance shown at El Parque, fully aware of the difficulty of winning on a demanding court like Caja Rural Zamora's, a team that grows week after week and will seek a second win to escape the danger zone. An objective shared with Fibwi Mallorca Palma, who will arrive in Ourense ready to impose themselves on COB, a team that needs to win to break their streak of three consecutive losses, or Bàsquet Menorca, who will host Insolac Caja 87 with the sole objective of no longer being the only team in the league with zero wins.
Although the great battle for survival will reserve much of the emotion for Sunday morning when Inveready Askatuak Gipuzkoa will have to recover their best form to cut short their streak of four consecutive losses. To do so, they must overcome Cajasol Coto Córdoba, ready to balance their record with a third win that brings confidence for the immediate future, just as Palmer Basket Mallorca and Alimerka Oviedo will arrive with their fourth win of the season on their record. Although to do so they will have to win a direct matchup that the Oviedo side enters with positive momentum from their recent results.
