Fox finished the series against the New York Knicks in an uncomfortable position. His impact in the closing moments, his decisions in moments of maximum tension, and the outcome of several games put his name in the debate. In a Finals series, everything is amplified. Even more so when it comes to the player with the largest contract on the roster and one of the men called upon to lead the team when the score tightens.
In San Antonio, however, the reading isn't limited to those final minutes. According to Michael C. Wright of ESPN, the organization's confidence in Fox remains firm. The Spurs also keep in mind the ankle sprain he suffered during the conference semifinals, a physical issue that could have affected his explosiveness, his ability to change pace, and his performance in a series taken to the limit.
The underlying issue will be how to reorganize the perimeter. Dylan Harper has grown much faster than expected and his playoff impact opens the door to a larger role. That forces San Antonio to find a new balance: Fox retains hierarchy, contract, and experience, while Harper demands playing time based on his performance.
The Spurs don't appear interested in an impulsive reaction. Keeping Fox also protects the value of a massive investment and avoids making a decision conditioned by the noise of a recent loss. The bet is on recovering him physically, adjusting roles, and checking whether this partnership can sustain a team that has already proven to be much closer to the ring than it seemed not long ago.
Next season will measure more than just Fox's individual level. It will measure whether San Antonio can turn that outside talent into a stable structure around Wembanyama, without Harper's emergence breaking the balance the franchise still believes is possible.
