Lithuanian point guard signs temporary contract with option to remain through end of season
Dominykas Stenionis (Kaunas, Lithuania, July 3, 2002) is the new point guard for FIATC Girona, signing a temporary contract with the club. The 1.79-meter (5'10") guard arrives from Valmiera Glass VIA of Latvia.
Stenionis began his career at Zalgiris Kaunas in the 2019/20 season, where he played for three seasons with the club's second team. In his final season with the club, he left Zalgiris to join Nevezis, competing in Lithuania's top division, where he played for two seasons.
In the 2024/25 season, he signed with Lietkabelis, also from Lithuania's top division, making his European competition debut in the EuroCup. His most recent season was spent at Valmiera Glass VIA in Latvia, where he averaged 13.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game, with an average rating of 17.1.
With the Latvian team, Stenionis was instrumental in winning the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. During the six playoff games, the point guard elevated his performance to 17.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game, with an average rating of 19. This same season, he also won the Latvian Basketball Cup after Valmiera defeated Ventspils in the final.
His growth at Valmiera came under coach Kaspars Vecvagars, who is well-known to Bàsquet Girona fans. The former Latvian player signed with Bàsquet Girona in July 2021 and was part of the team that achieved promotion from LEB Oro to the Liga Endesa that season.
Before making his European competition debut with Lietkabelis, Stenionis had already participated in the Adidas Next Generation Tournament with Zalgiris Kaunas U18 during the 2019/20 season.
International Career
An international with Lithuania's youth national teams, Stenionis has competed in European and World Championships with the U19 and U20 squads. With the U19 team, he participated in the World Championship held in Latvia in 2021, while in 2022 he competed in the U20 European Championship in Montenegro, where Lithuania finished in second place, behind Spain.
The Lithuanian point guard has already made his debut with the senior national team. He did so on August 28, 2026, in the match against Turkey in the European qualifying phase for the FIBA World Cup 2027.
Statement from Fernando San Emeterio, Sports Director:
"Following Isaac's injury, we understood that we needed to strengthen the point guard position to face the start of the double competition with three players in that position. The club made an effort to bring in Dominykas and complete the position. We thought of Dominykas because he is a player who performed very well last season in a league below the ACB level, but we believe he is ready to make the jump and compete in the ACB. Above all, we believe he fits very well with our style of play. He is a small player, but with great character and very electric. He has a great ability to create advantages for his teammates, to unbalance on the first line and, from there, find good passes. He also has a good ability to create his own shots. We believe he fits very well with the pace at which we want to play and our way of understanding basketball. For all these reasons, we have decided to bring him in initially with a temporary contract, with the option that he can stay for the entire season"."
