Casademont Zaragoza loses its top academy prospect. Dubai Basketball has executed the release clause of Soumaila Keita, a 2.12-meter Malian center born in September 2010, as confirmed by the Aragonese club in a statement. The player departs after just one season with the red-and-white academy structure.
One Season, One MVP
Keita arrived last summer from the Pablo Laso Academy, presented at the time as an academy signing and future prospect. The season has confirmed the diagnosis. With the youth team, he was named MVP of the Spanish Championship held in Cádiz after posting averages of 28.5 points, 13 rebounds and a 36.3 rating, leading the Zaragoza squad to the quarterfinals, where they fell to Valencia Basket by three points.
That wasn't all. He alternated appearances with the junior team and was part of the Liga U roster that finished fourth, averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in a U22 competition despite being just fifteen years old. And in January, he was one of the pieces of the Aragonese youth national team that won bronze at the CESA held in Zaragoza, a historic result for the region's basketball.
What This Move Says
For a EuroLeague club to execute the release clause of a player who hasn't yet turned sixteen—he turns sixteen next month—is no ordinary move. Dubai's project, which this same summer brought Toko Shengelia from Barcelona, extends its financial capacity to the academy market as well, a territory where Spanish academy clubs compete at a disadvantage: the clause exists, it gets paid, and the player leaves.
For Casademont, moreover, the timing is awkward. The departure forces a restructuring of the U22 roster plans just weeks before the competition begins, and comes in a summer when the club has almost completely rebuilt its first team.
Keita, who appears in some international projections among the best players born in 2010, will continue his development in an environment with more resources and fewer guaranteed minutes. Which of the two weighs more for a fifteen-year-old is a question only the coming years will answer.
