Barcelona Studies Juan Núñez's Future Despite Contract Through 2027

Barcelona Basket has not yet closed the book on Juan Núñez. Although the Madrid-born point guard has a contract through 2027, his continuity with the squad is not completely assured, according to 7 en Juego.

The situation is significant, because Núñez appeared to be one of the few names destined to remain in the new blaugrana project. After so many roster changes, his presence alongside Justin Robinson and Umoja Gibson gave some logic to the team's playmaking direction. However, the club still must decide what real role he can have.

Núñez arrived at Barcelona in 2024 after two solid seasons at Ratiopharm Ulm and after being selected 36th in the NBA Draft. He signed a three-year deal through June 30, 2027, in a clear bet on a young point guard with size and talent to run the offense.

The problem is that his Barcelona stint has not quite taken off. In his first season he played around 50 games across all competitions, averaging 5 points and 7.4 efficiency rating in EuroLeague and 5.1 points and 7.6 efficiency rating in the ACB, but injuries hampered his development. Barcelona itself reported arthroscopic surgery on his right knee with an estimated six-month recovery period.

It's not just about performance. There's also a question of fit. Núñez needs the ball, confidence, and playing time to be effective. Barcelona, meanwhile, is rebuilding a roster with competitive urgency and may not have the margin to wait too long.

That's where the doubt lies. If the club believes it can give him real minutes, his continuity makes sense. If not, the most logical move would be to find an exit that doesn't stall his development. At his age, staying as a third-string point guard without rhythm could be worse than changing scenery.

Barcelona has not made a final decision. But the message is already clear: having a contract does not guarantee having a place.
