Monbus Obradoiro Returns to ACB with Epi and Outstanding Sergi Quintela Performance (85-68)
may 08 2026Monbus Obradoiro hosted Inveready Gipuzkoa in a completely festive atmosphere with fans giving the players a rousing reception. Today's game would be historic for Galician basketball as it would secure promotion for a Coruña-based team regardless of the result. However, Sergio García's squad, a coach with a brilliant past at Leyma Coruña, would not make it easy, as they were also playing for home-court advantage in the playoffs, which could be decisive in their likely matchup against Oviedo. Monbus Obradoiro had to come back in the first quarter and then took the lead in the game, but couldn't break it open. The visitors played very effectively with scoring from just seven players. In the final quarter, Epi's team finally broke the game open and reached moments of celebration. Obradoiro missed its first possession and the visitors opened the scoring with a mid-range shot from Tate. Dos Anjos scored the first basket for Epi's team, as in so many other games this year, but the Brazilian's reaction showed the passion the Santiago players would bring to secure promotion in this game. Westermann increased his defensive intensity and stole the ball from Nacho Varela, finishing the play with a free throw made by Galán. Ngom entered the court early due to Nicolau's second foul in less than three minutes and drew a foul, taking advantage of his two free throws. Barcello appeared to score the first three-pointer of the game, while in the duel between Galán and Korsantia sparks flew, with the visitor getting the basket. The power forward became a protagonist by also adding a three-pointer. Tate's fast-break basket made it 0-7 and prompted Epi's first timeout (6-11). Andersson and Sergi Quintela entered, with the Lugo native forcing a foul on his first offensive action and showing his usual effectiveness from the line. Barcello made it 10-11 with a great individual play and Quintela brought García's timeout, returning the lead to Obradoiro. The instructions worked and Tate scored an open three-pointer. Ansorregi made his debut, but the run didn't exceed 0-5 as Barrueta scored a great and-one. Epi was already putting his entire second unit on the court, but McGhie scored a great three-pointer to keep pace. Andersson replied while Ansorregi and Kravic exchanged baskets. Now it was Maiza and Brito doing so, with a three-pointer from the Basque player and an and-one from the Portuguese. After a start with less accuracy, now both teams were putting on a high-level offensive show, which Sergi Quintela capped with a great three-pointer. Kravic put Obradoiro ahead by blocking Maiza's shot.
Inveready Gipuzkoa Shows It Won't Make Monbus Obradoiro's Promotion Easy (47-42)
The second quarter began with Quintela's recovery and lightning-fast layup. Ngom received another foul under the basket and continued not missing his free throws. The Senegalese giant tied the game with his first basket in play. Quintela once again showed his ability to steal and Brito took center stage to give Obradoiro the lead again. It didn't last long with McGhie's second three-pointer. Andersson scored and fell awkwardly, with the entire Sar crowd protesting the possible uncalled foul. A dunk by Kravic thanks to a steal and assists from Munnings heated up the Caldeira even more, which booed the referees again on a foul against Korsantia, who only made one free throw. Brito also received a foul and was already at 7 points. Westermann found Kravic and Obradoiro put the lead at six. Barrueta extended it with his first three-pointer. Ngom seemed shaken by a stray blow to the head on a Westermann foul and had to go to the bench. Sergio García brought in a good free-throw shooter like Maiza in his place, who made both free throws, but Dos Anjos took advantage of the foul trouble on Gipuzkoa's centers with a basket in transition and a defensive rebound. The 0-for-7 from three-pointers in this quarter, 4-for-19 overall, penalized Obradoiro and didn't allow them to extend the lead more, at moments when their suffocating defense was shutting down the visitors' offense. Barcello broke the drought and his three-pointer made it 58-49. McGhie took advantage of a foul to cut it and Ansorregi sealed it at 4-0. Quintela added another three-pointer and tied at 12 points with Barcello as the leading local scorers. Brito took advantage of a technical free throw on Sergio García and brought the lead back to 9. An Andersson three-pointer made it 12, the largest lead to that point. Nicolau went to the line but missed both. McGhie compensated with his third three-pointer. Andersson stole once more, giving the final possession to the Galicians, who didn't make their two shots.

McGhie opened the scoring in the decisive period, but Sergi Quintela sealed a 4-0 run with a steal included to prompt Sergio García's timeout. Brito appeared again at an important moment with a great three-pointer, but Ansorregi answered with another. Quintela continued leading and was already at 18 points. Ngom got the better of Kravic, but everything was forgotten with Brito's emphatic dunk that put the Galicians up 13. Epi's team didn't make all the right decisions on offense, but the intensity on defense, like Munnings arriving running for a great block, kept them with that good advantage. As in the previous quarters, Obradoiro entered the bonus before Gipuzkoa, who hadn't been called for a single foul in the more than five minutes they had played of this quarter.
