Unicaja Storms Pazo and Stops Rio Breogán (90-103)

Rio Breogán had scored over 100 points in four straight games and won two consecutive home games. Unicaja ended both streaks at Pazo dos Deportes (90-103). Txus Vidorreta's team took control in the second quarter, with Kendrick Perry and Tyler Kalinoski hitting from beyond the arc, and weathered Breogán's second-half comeback attempt. It's Unicaja's fifth consecutive win across Liga Endesa and the Basketball Champions League, and Breogán's second straight loss, leaving both teams with identical 3-2 records.

statistics

Breogán started strong, going up 5-0 before Kalinoski, in his return to Lugo, hit the first three-pointer for the visitors. Cameron Hunt gave Unicaja its first lead (7-8) and a 2+1 play by Willy Hernangómez opened up the first significant gap (11-17). Francis Alonso answered with five straight points and another 2+1, but Unicaja's second unit, featuring Will Thomas and Simonas Lukosius, kept the team ahead. A three-pointer by Jonathan Barreiro closed out the first quarter (24-26).

Perry and Kalinoski Break the Game Open

The second quarter decided the game. Five straight points by Hunt forced Luis Casimiro to call his first timeout (26-33). Breogán responded with five of their own and Vidorreta called time (31-33). From there, Unicaja strung together three-pointers from Perry and Kalinoski, prompting Casimiro to call another timeout (36-44), and the run continued to 39-57. Perry already had 15 points with two and a half minutes left in the half. A small local run left the score at 47-59 at halftime.

The third quarter started at a fast pace, with a dunk by Brankovic and an immediate response from the visitors. Amine Noua added a 2+1 after grabbing an offensive rebound (56-67) and David Kravish scored from the free-throw line for 59-73. With 61-79 and less than four minutes remaining in the quarter, the game seemed decided, but Francis Alonso wasn't ready to give up. The Malaga shooting guard, a product of Los Guindos academy, led a 10-0 run built on three-pointers that got the Pazo crowd on its feet (71-79). Rodions Pantzar stopped the streak with a layup at the buzzer (71-82).

Unicaja didn't allow the comeback to go further. Perry assisted Kravish on the first play of the fourth quarter (71-84) and the visitors maintained their lead through the final 90-103 score. Breogán missed out on their sixth straight game over 100 points spanning last season and this one, and Unicaja avenged last year's 98-82 loss at the Pazo. The victory also had significance from the bench. Vidorreta arrived in Lugo with the prospect of reaching 746 games in the elite level and surpassing Manel Comas as the fourth coach with the most games in ACB history, facing off against Casimiro, who coached Unicaja in the past.
