Enes Kanter Freedom Formally Registers for 2027 WNBA Draft

What began as a social media announcement has now taken official form. Enes Kanter Freedom submitted a letter to the WNBA dated August 6th formally communicating his intention to enter the 2027 draft lottery, and on Monday shared a copy of the document on his Instagram stories with the hashtag #LetFreedomPlay.

The letter is addressed to the league office and the player personnel department, with a copy sent to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. In it, the 34-year-old center notifies what he describes as his voluntary decision to join the pool of candidates for next year's draft. He closes by requesting acknowledgment of receipt and that all further communications be directed to his personal email.

The Player's Argument

Freedom contends that he meets the requirements based on his age and lack of remaining college eligibility, citing Article XIII, Section 1(b) of the collective bargaining agreement. He had laid out his core argument days earlier in a video: if it's enough to declare who you are, then in his view, he meets all the conditions to compete in the league.

In that same message, he sought to distance himself from the more mocking interpretations of his initiative. He asserted that he does not intend to ridicule anyone and that his request is simply that the rules be applied equally to everyone.

What the Rules Say and What the League Has Done

This is where the effort hits its first wall. The WNBA collective bargaining agreement does not include self-identification as a pathway to eligibility, so Freedom's interpretation is his own and not a reflection of the actual language. The league has also not weighed in: it has not declared that he meets the requirements, has not added him to any 2027 draft candidate list, and has not invited him to a preseason camp.

There is even an unresolved detail in his own account. In his statements, he has placed the draft in April at times and May at others in 2027.

The Context: A Debate That Has Been Heated for Weeks

The move comes amid an intense public debate over the participation of transgender women in women's sports, reignited following comments by Indiana Fever shooting guard Sophie Cunningham to ESPN and responses from players and coaches who have taken opposing positions. Days after Freedom's announcement, former player Royce White proposed a similar maneuver for the same draft.

Freedom, the third overall pick in the 2011 draft and an 11-season NBA veteran with the Jazz, Thunder, Knicks, Blazers, and Celtics, has not played since the Houston Rockets released him in February 2022. Born in Zurich 34 years ago and standing 6'11", in recent years he has developed an intense activity as a political commentator, a role he himself has attributed to the end of his NBA career.
