EuroLeague: Fenerbahce Beko Dominates Zalgiris Kaunas, One Win Away From Final Four (86-74) [2-0]
ISTANBUL. Fenerbahce Beko decisively defeated Zalgiris Kaunas 86-74 in the second game of the EuroLeague playoffs, powered by a solid collective effort led by Niccolo Melli, and takes a 2-0 series lead, just one victory away from the Final Four.
The Turkish squad imposed its pace from the opening tip, establishing control in the early minutes with clear dominance on the boards and very balanced offensive execution. That early command allowed Fenerbahce Beko to open an initial gap on the scoreboard, forcing Zalgiris Kaunas to play from behind practically from the jump ball.
The Lithuanian team's response came through Azoulas Tubelis and Moses Wright, both with 16 points, who tried to keep Zalgiris competitive during the second quarter. However, each visiting comeback found an immediate answer in the team basketball of the Ottoman squad, which maintained the distance with accuracy and discipline on both ends of the floor.
The decisive blow came in the third quarter. Fenerbahce Beko elevated its defensive intensity and accelerated in transition, extending the lead to 20 points and leaving the game practically decided. Nando De Colo (16 points) and Tarik Biberovic (15) supported Melli's leadership, while Mikael Jantunen contributed 13 points and Wade Baldwin delivered a very complete performance with 11 points and 7 assists.
With the game already under control, the fourth quarter served to manage the lead and confirm another dominant victory for Fenerbahce Beko, which led by as much as 23 points against a Zalgiris Kaunas that found no sufficient answers to compete evenly for 40 minutes. Sylvain Francisco, with 11 points, was the third standout player for the Lithuanian squad.
The result solidifies Fenerbahce Beko's dominance in this EuroLeague playoff series, following their victory in the first game (89-78), and reinforces their candidacy to return to the Final Four.
With a 2-0 series lead, Fenerbahce Beko will now travel to Kaunas with the opportunity to close out the series in Game 3, while Zalgiris Kaunas will be forced to respond at home if they want to extend their EuroLeague playoff run.
