AS Monaco Basket has gone from celebrating a title to facing its darkest scenario in a matter of days. The Monegasque club, fresh French league champions, has been provisionally excluded from domestic competitions for the 2026/27 season for failing to provide sufficient financial guarantees.
The DNCCG's ruling—the body responsible for overseeing club finances in France—leaves Monaco without a place in the LNB. This is not merely about losing the chance to defend the crown won this very season: the problem directly threatens the continuity of the project as it has been known until now.
The club had already shown signs of fragility in recent months. Financial troubles hampered the final stretch of the season and forced the team to seek urgent solutions just to finish the campaign. Yet the squad managed to hold firm on the court and ultimately lifted the title, a paradox that now seems even more striking.
The exclusion is a massive blow for an entity accustomed to competing at the European elite level. Without a domestic championship and with its continental presence also in doubt, Monaco finds itself in a critical situation to plan its roster, budget, and competitive calendar.
The decision is not yet final. The club can appeal to the French Federation, which must rule before July 20. Additionally, another date looms large: July 10, when Monaco's courts must rule on the immediate future of the entity following the financial measures that allowed it to close out the last season.
Monaco's case paints a striking picture: a freshly crowned champion that, before even beginning to prepare its title defense, is fighting just to keep competing.
