Gaby Deck Frees Up Non-EU Roster Spot for Real Madrid

Gabriel Deck will play next season as an EU citizen in the Liga Endesa. According to Pilar Casado on COPE, the Argentine wing has obtained Spanish citizenship and will no longer occupy a non-EU roster spot for Real Madrid.

The news has direct importance for Madrid's roster planning. Deck does not become a homegrown player, because he is not a local academy product, but he does stop counting as a non-EU player. It's the same situation that Facundo Campazzo already had: Spanish passport, EU citizen status, but not a homegrown player.

The change provides significant relief for Madrid. Last season the team had to manage with three non-EU players—Deck, Trey Lyles, and Chuma Okeke—which forced them to leave one out of each ACB roster. Now, with Deck already as an EU citizen and Lyles out of the team, the only non-EU player remaining on the roster is Okeke.
