Spain won't face Giannis Antetokounmpo in Athens. The Greek forward will not be included in his country's roster for August's FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifying window, according to Eurohoops. The official roster announcement comes Tuesday morning, but his absence is already confirmed.
The reason is neither physical nor sporting: it's an explicit request from the Miami Heat. The franchise wants its new star to travel to the United States earlier to join preseason preparations for the 2026-27 season, his first in Florida following the trade that took him out of Milwaukee in June after thirteen years.
A summer in a hurry to begin
Miami's decision makes sense looking at the calendar the player is leaving behind. His 2025-26 campaign was the most injury-plagued of his career: only 36 games played, the lowest figure since arriving in the NBA, and a hyperextension of his left knee in mid-March that sidelined him for the rest of the season. The Bucks missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Add to that the franchise change. The Heat gave up a massive package for him—Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, and several first-round picks—and want to maximize every day of work together from the start. At 31 years old with a $58.5 million contract for this season, Giannis is Pat Riley's absolute bet for an immediate championship.
What changes for Spain
His absence alters the scenario for the most demanding game remaining for Chus Mateo's national team in this phase. Spain visits Athens on Monday, August 31, three days after hosting Portugal in Zaragoza, and arrives with qualification well on track: two wins in this window would practically seal the ticket to Qatar.
And it's worth remembering why this news matters. The last time both teams faced off, in the group stage of EuroBasket 2025, Greece won 86-90 and eliminated Spain in a game where Giannis posted 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists. That loss resulted in Spain's worst-ever EuroBasket finish and opened the cycle change now led by Mateo.
Greece forced to row without its beacon
For the Greeks, the absence is a bigger problem. They carry a 3-3 record from the previous phase and enter Group I of the European round one game away from the spots that grant World Cup access, so they need to win no matter what.
The team will gather on August 14 and play two warm-up friendlies at the Telekom Center in Athens, against Poland on the 22nd and Cyprus on the 24th. Then they'll travel to Riga to face Ukraine on the 28th before the matchup against Spain.
His absence, moreover, is not temporary. NBA commitments prevent Giannis from playing any of the remaining qualifying games, so his next appearance in a Greek jersey will only come at the World Cup in Qatar, provided Greece gets there.
