Why Booker and not someone else

The connection has a date and place: Paris 2024. Steve Kerr coached Booker there with the U.S. national team and was impressed by something that in a roster full of stars is not insignificant—his willingness to adapt his game to what the team needed. They won gold, and the head coach has not hidden his admiration for the shooting guard since then.

Sportingly, the fit explains itself. Pairing Booker with Stephen Curry would give him the best perimeter partner since the days of Klay Thompson, with one important difference: Booker is not just a catch-and-shoot player; he also generates and creates with the ball in his hands. That would allow for distributing an offensive load that currently still falls on a 38-year-old Curry who, while maintaining elite-level play, cannot sustain that weight indefinitely.

Why Phoenix might listen someday

This is where the speculation finds some support. The Suns' project raises reasonable doubts about their ability to compete with the West's elite, despite the additions of Miles Bridges and Luke Kennard, and Mark Williams' injury doesn't help.

Booker is 29 years old with a contract through 2030 worth roughly $250 million. The franchise will have to decide at some point whether it can build a winning team around him in the short or medium term, or whether it makes more sense to calculate how much they can get for him and shorten the timeline of a rebuild.
