Isaiah Stewart Bolsters Memphis Grizzlies' Interior Defense

Por ·

The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired Isaiah Stewart from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for three future second-round draft picks. The trade allows Detroit to create salary cap flexibility and maneuver for future moves.

Stewart arrives in Memphis following a solid season with Detroit, where he established himself as an important piece off the bench. The center averaged 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, numbers that earned him seventh place in the Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Despite his strong performance, the Pistons have decided to move on from his contract, valued at approximately $15 million annually through 2028, with the goal of preparing for Jalen Duren's extension and maintaining salary cap flexibility. Detroit will continue to rely on Paul Reed as an interior alternative, with a much more manageable contract in its final guaranteed year.

For the Grizzlies, Stewart's arrival adds toughness, defense, and depth to a position they already reinforced in the Draft with selections Cameron Boozer, No. 3, and Karim López, No. 21.

Interestingly, Memphis is capitalizing once again on its recent market relationship with Detroit. The Pistons had previously sent three second-round picks to the Grizzlies to move up in the Draft, the same price Memphis now pays to acquire Stewart.

With this move, the Grizzlies continue reshaping their roster and add a proven, physical interior presence with competitive experience to strengthen their rotation.
