Jalen Duren Rejects $200M Pistons Offer, Demands Max Salary

Two hundred million guaranteed wasn't enough. Jalen Duren has rejected Detroit Pistons' latest offer, a five-year contract that also included clauses that didn't sit well with the player's camp, including a weight-control provision.

What's on the table

The proposal amounted to $200 million over five seasons, all guaranteed. The center, however, is holding firm: he will only sign for the maximum salary.

That figure has been the subject of discussion since August. Duren is asking for a starting salary close to 25 percent of the salary cap, around $41 million annually, while the franchise has been operating in the $30 million range.

What's new is the detail about the clauses. For a contract of this magnitude to include weight-control conditions is a relevant nuance: it's not just a money discussion, but also one about trust.

Media Day around the corner

The situation arrives just days before Media Day and with preseason camps opening. His presence in the preparation is in doubt, and with it his immediate future with the team.

Milwaukee turns up the heat

The Bucks have re-emerged as a destination, now with a concrete proposal: a sign-and-trade that would include Myles Turner, Kevin Porter Jr., and a future first-round pick from the Miami Heat.

It's a significant move, because until now the Pistons had expressly ruled out any sign-and-trade agreement. Sacramento also remains in the equation, willing to offer him the maximum next summer if the player accepts the qualifying offer and arrives as a free agent in 2027.

2025-26 numbers

None of this makes sense without his performance. Duren averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 27 minutes per game, shooting 65 percent from the field.

That season earned him his first All-Star selection and a spot on the NBA's All-Third Team. He's 22 years old.

The contrast

All this is happening at the same franchise that ten days ago extended Ausar Thompson for five years and $155 million. In other words, the Pistons have committed less money to their defensive wing than they're offering Duren, and with Thompson there was a quick agreement.
