Head coach Jaume Ponsarnau will continue leading Surne Bilbao's bench through the 2028-29 season after reaching a contract renewal agreement with the Basque club
Jaume Ponsarnau will remain at the helm of Surne Bilbao through 2029 following an agreement reached between the Tárrega-born coach and the Bizkaia-based club.
Ponsarnau joined the Bilbao franchise in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has accumulated 189 games on the Bilbao bench, making him as of this March the second coach with the most games in Bilbao Basket's history behind Txus Vidorreta (331).
The Catalan coach etched his name into club history last season by winning the FIBA Europe Cup, the club's first title and the first European title for a professional team in the historical territory. It was the result of work that has brought solidity and sporting stability to the project, as the Tárrega native has successfully achieved the sporting objectives of each season.
His experience in the ACB, in European competition—winning the Eurocup title in the 2018-19 season—and with the Spanish Federation, where he currently serves as the B national team coach, have been key to providing the project with stability and quality in daily work. His work with young players is recognized throughout the basketball world, and clear evidence of this are players who have taken major steps in their careers under his guidance, such as Tryggvi Hlinason, Melwin Pantzar, Bassala Bagayoko, Thijs De Ridder, and Rubén Domínguez.
We are looking at a coach who, beyond being a benchmark on the sidelines, perfectly exemplifies the club's and fans' values. Ponsarnau is a great example of commitment and honesty, and his work demonstrates that you can have ambition rooted in humility and absolute respect for all opponents. A coach who enjoys great esteem from players, staff, club workers, agents, and supporters.
We are proud that someone like Jaume, who understood from day one what we are and what we want to be, represents us. A coach who understands the place where we live and is a voice for our tradition. Who uses the Basque language, whether to drive the team forward with the example of a wolf pack, or to put his players rowing in a trainera. This project bears Jaume's stamp, and we want it to continue that way.
From the club, we consider Jaume Ponsarnau the ideal person to drive the new phase of sporting growth and institutional strengthening that, once initiated, we trust will be consolidated over the coming years.
