Joel Soriano Dominates Paint as Monbus Obradoiro Edges Ilerna Lleida 91-89

The Fontes do Sar multipurpose venue and its fans faced the third matchday against Ilerna Lleida with optimism. Both teams arrived with one win and one loss, and reaching two victories in three games would be very positive for either side. The game featured several interesting individual matchups such as McGhee versus Childress, two great scorers, and Perrin against Soriano, but the spotlight would also be on Caleb Agada, facing his former team and likely having to defend James Batemon, one of the stars of this early season. The game was very tight and tense, and Joel Soriano decided it. Epi's team took advantage of their superior interior game to prevail, but Encuentra's squad fought until the end and could have taken the game.

Monbus Obradoiro dominates early with defense until McGhee enters and rallies (22-21)

Caleb Agada, starting instead of Childress, opened the scoring against his former team with a great penetration. Meindl found Galán on the next play while Galicia's defense held the visitors scoreless for nearly two minutes. Perrin opened the Catalan scoring and Soriano answered immediately. Agada remained incisive and drew two fouls. The Nigerian missed both attempts, but the offensive rebound gave new opportunities to the Santiago team that didn't translate into points. Galán hit a three-pointer and made it 9-2. Gerard Encuentra changed his outside game, but Lleida continued to miss their shots. A great dunk by Soriano, assisted once again by the omnipresent Meindl, who already had two rebounds and three assists, prompted Encuentra to call timeout. McGhee showed his quality in one-on-one situations and Epi brought in Childress and Dos Anjos, while Meindl made two free throws. McGhee demonstrated he had recovered his shooting touch after going 0-for-9 the previous game and added his first three-pointer from distance. Dos Anjos got a good and-one under the basket, but missed the free throw. Childress found Galán, who reached 7 points and made it 17-9 on the scoreboard. McGhee hit another three-pointer causing a murmur in the stands, as memories of his first game against Valencia were frightening. Perrin reduced the lead further with a dunk and when the Catalans had a chance to tie, Abogidi appeared with a steal and a great dunk. McGhee and Childress exchanged three-pointers and Sanz made his debut with a free throw. McGhee showed that rival fear was logical with an illogical three-pointer to close the quarter down just one.

Obradoiro's interior game prevails over Ilerna Lleida's outside game (49-43)

Hughes put Ilerna Lleida ahead for the first time with an open three-pointer, although Dos Anjos quickly tied the game with a good move in the paint. Agada was vertical again and returned the advantage to the Galicians. Batemon received a hard foul from Abogidi, but that didn't prevent him from making his free throws. Dos Anjos became a nightmare for the visiting defense, with his teammates finding the Brazilian giant attack after attack. Quintela took advantage of a disruptive foul to add two free throws and Barrueta's three-pointer closed the play putting Epi's team up by 7. Ejim also closed the quarter from three-point range. Meindl appeared again to score from mid-range. McGhee already had 16 points and Faure made his ACB debut with a dunk. Paulí reduced with a free throw and Childress responded also thanks to a foul. García benefited from the attention McGhee generates to hit an open three-pointer. The game was in moments of more intensity than accuracy until Barcello appeared with his mid-range shot. Paulí made one of his free throws and Perrin followed suit. Soriano delighted the crowd with another dunk and McGhee silenced them with a new basket. Soriano was eager and drove inside again for another basket. The same could be said of Galán, who already had nine points with a new penetration that led to Encuentra's timeout. The young coach's instructions translated into a Hughes three-pointer and an Epi timeout. The play was a marvel crafted by Barcello for Soriano's spectacular finish.

Monbus Obradoiro continues leading in a very intense game (69-60)

The second half began under the watchful eye of Chus Mateo, who was on a Galician tour having gone to Lugo yesterday and Santiago today. There was a free throw for Barcello for a technical on Perrin during halftime. Meindl continued in utility mode and scored off an offensive rebound, but Perrin imitated him with a foul included. The Brazilian wing drew a foul on the next play and didn't miss. The referees called another foul on Sanz and Obradoiro entered the bonus without having played even a minute and a half. Soriano only made one free throw and Ejim reduced with a quick basket. Barcello's soft and precise shot appeared again and Lleida also entered the bonus. Galán's work on the offensive rebound took him to the line and he tied with Soriano at 11 points as the local team's leading scorers. A technical for holding the ball didn't translate into points when McGhee missed and the game entered a messy phase. Kuath also went to the line and also missed one. Soriano became strong on the offensive rebound to put the Compostelans up by ten. After several misses by both sides, Sanz broke the drought with a side three-pointer. The game went crazy with turnovers and misses and Kuath took advantage with a great offensive rebound. The misses continued and now it was Agada who took advantage with a coast-to-coast. Paulí answered with a backdoor and Dos Anjos was awarded a basket for an interception. Sanz scored two and Agada answered with a three-pointer. The Nigerian recovered the ball and animated the crowd after drawing a foul. He made only the second free throw and the quarter ended with Obradoiro up by 9.

Soriano decides the game (91-89)

Dos Anjos put the maximum at 11 at the start of the final quarter, but Sanz answered with a putback. McGhee reached 20 points on an illegal block by Abogidi. Soriano returned to the court to dominate the Catalan paint. Batemon got his first basket in play with a great and-one, but missed the free throw. Sanz continued being the unexpected protagonist and already had 13 points with another three-pointer. Batemon continued assuming the role he hadn't taken in the other quarters and made two free throws to make it 73-71. The visiting star committed an offensive foul on the next play and was at four fouls. Childress made two free throws, upon review, and didn't miss. Soriano got the crowd on their feet by forcing a visiting turnover, but a foul of his own on the rebound put Obradoiro back in the bonus. Very good Galician defense ended in a three-pointer from 8 meters thanks to McGhee's talent, putting the visitors down one. Barcello extended with a free throw and Meindl with a three-pointer. A bad Galician play ended in a fast break for Encuentra's team and Epi's timeout. The game looked like it would be decided by details and accuracy. Monbus Obradoiro missed and Batemon scored a three-pointer for 80-79. The most reliable for the Galicians continued to be Soriano, who scored again in the paint. Ejim got an and-one on an interception, but didn't tie by missing the free throw. Soriano and Galán each had four fouls, but that didn't prevent the Dominican from answering with an and-one and reaching 20 points. Ejim got another and-one and Galán's elimination. Childress and Batemon exchanged misses, but Obradoiro took advantage of the rival turnover for an easy basket by Barrueta. Encuentra called timeout with 1:56 remaining. Ejim missed the three-pointer and fouled Agada, but the Nigerian missed both free throws. The offensive rebound initially favored Obradoiro, but the referees decided to review, maintaining the decision. After an exchange of misses, Agada scored on a great penetration for 89-84 with a minute remaining and Encuentra called timeout. Ejim missed again and the Galician victory looked promising for a moment. It took Agada missing his three-pointer and Batemon making his. Obradoiro was up two, with the ball and 31 seconds to play. Barcello's miss and Sanz's basket tied it again. Epi called timeout with 8 seconds remaining. The play ended with Childress finding Soriano alone under the basket, but Batemon arrived in time to prevent the basket with a foul. Soriano made both with 4 seconds remaining with Encuentra out of timeouts. McGhee missed and the victory stayed at Sar.
