José Manuel Calderón Promoted to Assistant General Manager with Cleveland Cavaliers

José Manuel Calderón transitions from external advisor to front office role. The Cleveland Cavaliers have announced a reorganization of their basketball operations leadership in which the former Spanish international assumes the position of assistant general manager.

The New Structure

The announcement was made by Koby Altman, president of basketball operations for the franchise, and includes several moves.

Brandon Weems is promoted to general manager, Jon Nichols to associate general manager, and Brendon Yu and Calderón himself become assistant general managers. Additionally, the club has hired Dashiell Flynn as director of basketball operations technology.

Altman emphasized that the promotions reflect confidence in those who have built and maintained the organization, and stressed the goal of maintaining the level of internal collaboration by giving responsibility to proven leaders in their respective areas.

Calderón's Path in Cleveland

The relationship goes back years. Calderón was part of the roster that reached the Finals in the 2017-18 season, and in 2022 he joined the franchise as an advisor.

The club values his role in various initiatives both on and off the court, including the preseason campus that the Cavaliers held this year in Andalusia.

Before entering the front office, he had worked for the Players Association, the NBPA, as special assistant to the executive director, collaborating with then-executive director Michele Roberts on union strategy and matters of interest to players.

The Spanish Connection

There is a detail worth remembering that connects to what happened this very month. When the Cavaliers selected Khalifa Diop in the 2022 Draft and decided to let him develop in Spain, Altman explicitly announced that Calderón would monitor his progress.

Four years later, the Senegalese center has signed with the franchise, leaving Baskonia without one of its big men on the eve of the season. That long-distance monitoring was part of the work for which Calderón has just been promoted.
