International basketball mourns the passing of José 'Piculín' Ortiz, who died Tuesday at age 62, confirmed by the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation. The former player had been battling cancer since 2023, which he had made public.
His time in Spain defined much of his career and established him as a reference center in the ACB League. His breakthrough came at CAI Zaragoza during the 1987-88 season, where he averaged 18.3 points per game across 31 contests, demonstrating from the start a consistent scoring ability and enormous presence in the paint.
That performance opened the doors to Real Madrid in the 1989-90 campaign. There he sustained his impact with 16 points and 7.2 rebounds per game on average, maintaining solid shooting percentages and proving he could produce in the most demanding scenarios.
Later, his stint at FC Barcelona confirmed his reliability. In the 1990-91 season he played 47 games with averages of 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds, adding an intimidating defensive presence with 2.3 blocks per game. A year later, despite having less playing time, he maintained solid numbers with 13 points and 7.9 rebounds.
Away from the spotlight of the big clubs, he remained a decisive player. At BC Andorra (1992-93) he reached his best rebounding numbers with 8.9 captures per game, plus 15.6 points and 18.5 in player efficiency rating. His time in Spain concluded at Unicaja Málaga, where he again delivered reliable production with 13.2 points and a notable 60.1% from two-point range.
In total, Ortiz accumulated 177 games in the ACB, with 2,686 points and 1,293 rebounds, figures that reflect a career marked by consistency and productivity. Beyond the numbers, his profile was that of a physical, competitive center with the ability to adapt to different contexts without losing effectiveness.
Established as a reference figure in Puerto Rican basketball, his legacy endures both for his performance and the impact he left on every team he played for.
Rest in peace.
