jun 30 2026Another dance! The Tenerife team and Brazilian point guard have sealed a one-year renewal agreement, with the playmaker set to begin his eighth consecutive campaign with the Canary Islands club.
La Laguna Tenerife and Marcelinho Huertas have agreed to a one-year contract extension, meaning the Brazilian point guard will embark on his eighth consecutive season with the black-and-gold jersey.
The São Paulo native comes off leading another successful year for the Canary Islands team, appearing in 49 official games across all competitions during the recently concluded 2025-26 season, averaging 14.9 points and 5.5 assists in the ACB, including the domestic league and playoffs; and 12 points and 6.2 assists in the Basketball Champions League (BCL).
In the highest-scoring regular season of his career in the Liga Endesa (averaging 15.6 points per game), Marce was the league's leading assist provider (5.7) for the third consecutive year and fifth time in his career, tying the all-time record held by Elmer Bennett, while also being the league's best free throw shooter at 94% accuracy and earning selection to the 'All-Second Team' for the season in both the ACB and BCL, where he was additionally honored as the 'Best Player' of the decade, coinciding with the tournament's tenth anniversary.
Huertas (São Paulo, May 25, 1983) arrived on the island in the summer of 2019 and from day one led the Canary Islands project during the best era in its history with multiple titles along the way (one BCL and two Intercontinental Cups). In his seven seasons wearing black and gold, the island club always qualified for the playoff finals for the championship, including three semifinal appearances; as well as for the Copa del Rey, including a runner-up finish in Badalona 2023. During this period, only three other teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia) achieved that perfect record of appearances (14/14) across playoffs and Copa.
Along the way, Marce achieved several Liga Endesa milestones, extending his long list of accomplishments from previous years, including his status as the league's all-time leading assist provider (3,413), fourth in the ranking of players with the most games played (732) and victories recorded (488); as well as fifth in player efficiency rating (8,429).
Additionally, Huertas set numerous records as a black-and-gold player that have made him a true legend of the Canary Islands club, of which he is currently the ACB all-time leader in scoring (3,351 points) and assists (1,562); as well as being the third player with the most accumulated games with the island club in the elite league (245), second in player efficiency rating (3,713), and third in minutes played (5,998).
An exemplary figure on and off the court, he will continue leading the black-and-gold project for the enjoyment of Tenerife fans and basketball in general.
