With just over two months to go, the fifth window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifying phase kicks off, with Spain facing two decisive matches. First, they will play away against Montenegro on Thursday, November 26, and then host Greece at home on Sunday, November 29 (6:00 PM) in Santiago de Compostela.
The match will take place at Pabellón Multiusos Fontes do Sar in an event promoted by the Xunta de Galicia through Turismo de Galicia. This marks the return of the Spanish Men's National Team to Galicia two years after their match against Slovakia in Ourense in November 2024.
This will be the fourth match the Men's National Team plays in Santiago de Compostela, and the first in an official competition. The three previous friendlies Spain played in Santiago took place in 1983 against Panama and the USSR, and in 2013 against Macedonia, all ending in victories for Spain.
On this occasion, Chus Mateo's squad aims to put their World Cup qualification back on track, counting on the support of their fans. The atmosphere at Fontes do Sar could make the difference in the match against Greece, where #LaFamilia hopes to take a decisive step and, beyond winning, improve their negative point differential of 2 points following their loss in Athens.
With the Greece match, Spain will wrap up this qualifying window and will only have two final qualifying matches ahead: away against Portugal on Friday, February 26, and at home against Montenegro on Monday, March 1. Currently, #LaFamilia sits in second place in Group A with a 5-3 record, tied with Georgia in third place, and one win behind Ukraine, who lead the group. Below them, Portugal, Greece, and Montenegro are all tied with 4 wins and 4 losses each.
