TORRELAVEGA — Leyma Coruña defeated Grupo Alega Cantabria 79-88 in Primera FEB after a demanding game at Vicente Trueba, where the Galician team had to rally in the third quarter led by Caio Pacheco, Paul Jorgensen, and Joe Cremo. The victory gives Leyma Coruña their 25th win of the season and keeps them firmly in contention for promotion.
The start of the matchup between Grupo Alega Cantabria and Leyma Coruña was marked by offensive struggles. Both teams began with difficulty scoring and the scoreboard advanced slowly until 6-6 midway through the first quarter. Jiahao Yu took the lead for the hosts, while Carles Marco's team distributed offensive responsibilities with Strahinja Micovic starting.
Little by little Leyma Coruña found its rhythm. A steal by Caio Pacheco allowed Thiam to put double digits on the visiting scoreboard (6-10) and the connection between the two appeared again shortly after with a spectacular alley-oop. Although Lapornik responded with a three-pointer for Cantabria, Joe Cremo provided security from the free throw line and the Galicians closed the first quarter with an advantage (15-20), despite Dídac Cuevas' spectacular three-pointer from his own end.
The second period maintained a tight tone. Leyma Coruña found some breathing room with the outside shots from Love and Micovic, and a three-pointer from Jacobo Díaz extended the visiting lead to 22-30, forcing local coach Lolo Encinas to call a timeout.
The orange team then went through a moment of offensive struggles, missing several shots, although Cantabria also failed to take advantage of that situation to cut the deficit clearly. Thiam broke the drought with a dunk and, after a flagrant foul by Diop that allowed Yu to score, Barro and Paul Jorgensen stabilized the visiting game again. Still, the Cantabrians remained close to the game thanks to their outside accuracy and reached halftime still within reach (36-41).
The most delicate moment for Leyma Coruña came after the break. Samu Rodríguez and Reggie Johnson led the local comeback and Cantabria equalized the game again (46-46), forcing Carles Marco to call a timeout.
In the midst of the pressure at Vicente Trueba, the key men of the Galician team appeared. Paul Jorgensen and Jacobo Díaz scored from beyond the arc to regain breathing room (46-52), and shortly after Caio Pacheco took control of the game with an offensive run that allowed Leyma Coruña to surpass the ten-point advantage barrier for the first time (47-59).
With the team already rolling, the Galician squad faced the final quarter with an advantage (52-63). Joe Cremo and Álex Jou struck early from three-point range and elevated the difference to 17 points (52-69), practically sealing the game.
Cantabria tried to resist until the end supported by Lapornik's strong performance, who finished as the leading scorer with 21 points, but Leyma Coruña maintained control of the game at all times during the final stretch.
The Galician team managed the advantage solidly, slowed the pace when the victory was already secured, and allowed Grupo Alega Cantabria to slightly reduce the difference in the final minutes without putting the victory in jeopardy.
Leyma Coruña thus adds their twenty-fifth victory in Primera FEB, consolidating their excellent season and confirming their ability to compete even in challenging venues like Vicente Trueba.
