La Laguna Tenerife signs Xabi López-Arostegui for two seasons with an option for a third. The 6'7" wing arrives from Valencia Basket, where he won back-to-back titles this season
A new addition to the Canary Islands family! La Laguna Tenerife has secured the services of Spanish international Xabi López-Arostegui (XLA) for the next two seasons, with an option for a third. The new black-and-gold player, a 6'7" wing who can play both shooting guard and small forward, arrives from Valencia Basket, the team with which he won the Liga Endesa championship and the Supercopa Endesa this season, in addition to reaching the EuroLeague semifinals and the Copa del Rey semifinals.
López-Arostegui (Getxo, 5/19/1997) averaged 6.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in the just-concluded league season and knows Liga Endesa very well, accumulating a total of 262 games spread across his time at Joventut de Badalona (2016-21), where he coincided with current La Laguna Tenerife head coach Jaka Lakovic when he was an assistant coach, and the aforementioned Valencia (2021-26). Additionally, he has played a total of 66 games in the EuroLeague and 70 in the EuroCup.
A native of Biscay, XLA began playing at Colegio Askartza and CB Getxo in his hometown before joining Penya's youth academy at the cadet level. After four years in Badalona's minor league affiliates, he signed his first professional contract and began a distinguished career that included four full seasons with Penya's first team and five with the Valencia squad.
Along the way, the new black-and-gold wing earned several significant accolades. Twice named to the Liga Endesa 'All-Young Team' (2018 and 2019), he was also distinguished as the best small forward in Liga Endesa and a member of the 'All-Star Team' for the 2020-21 season.
López-Arostegui has also been an international for Spain at all levels, including a total of 41 official games with the senior national team. An Olympian at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games, and European champion in 2022, he also won gold at the 2013 U16 EuroBasket and finished fourth at the 2014 U17 World Championship.
