The Houston Rockets continue strengthening their perimeter rotation with experience and competitive character. According to Shams Charania, Marcus Smart has agreed to a two-year deal with the Texas franchise worth $13 million, with a player option for the second year.
The move marks Smart's reunion with Ime Udoka, the head coach with whom he previously worked at the Boston Celtics. The shooting guard arrives in Houston to provide defense, leadership, and toughness on the perimeter—three aspects that fit perfectly with the identity the Rockets have tried to build in recent years.
Smart, named Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, is not a signing designed solely for the stats. His value lies in defensive pressure, energy, communication on the back end, and the ability to elevate the competitive level of a second unit.
Houston thus adds a veteran profile to provide more solidity to its backcourt. After also bringing in Bogdan Bogdanovic, the Rockets continue adding proven pieces to surround their core and compete with better odds in the Western Conference.
