Matchday 6 Liga Endesa: Unicaja-Barça, Galician Derby, and Tavares Two Blocks Away from History

Por ·

Matchday 6 of Liga Endesa begins with bad news for the league leader. Real Madrid, the only undefeated team (5-0), loses two of their most in-form players: Theo Maledon, October's MVP, suffers a right knee sprain following the loss to Fenerbahçe, and Mikael Jantunen has a complete rupture of the plantar fascia in his left foot. They join the long-term absences of Gaby Deck and Usman Garuba.

Unicaja-Barça (Sunday, 19:00)

The marquee matchup takes place at the Carpena. Txus Vidorreta's Unicaja arrives in their best form, with three consecutive victories by increasingly larger margins, and with Amine Noua established as the league's most valued big man (20 rating, 8 rebounds, and 80% from two-point range). Barça, fresh off a win over Valencia in the EuroLeague, continues searching for their first league victory away from the Palau. Their offense ranks among the competition's best, but their defense is among the worst. They recover Joel Parra but lose Juan Núñez and have Umoja Gibson dealing with injuries. At Unicaja, Tyson Pérez, Yannick Nzosa, and Alberto Díaz remain sidelined, awaiting Kevin Knox's debut.

Monbus Obradoiro-Río Breogán (Sunday, 12:00)

The Galician derby returns to Fontes do Sar for the first time since March 2024. Both teams arrive with 3-2 records and the all-time series is tied at four apiece, though Obradoiro dominates at home (3-1). Breogán, the league's second-best offense, arrives with concerns over Bolton and Ilic. Dominik Mavra is ten assists away from becoming the all-time assists leader in Lugo club history. At Obradoiro, the only absence is Olle Lundqvist, and Sergi Quintela will face his brother Erik, with whom he shared a locker room in Lugo for eight seasons.

Real Madrid-San Pablo Burgos (Sunday, 12:30)

With 737 blocks, Edy Tavares is two away from surpassing Fran Vázquez (738) as the all-time blocks leader in ACB history. Moreover, he will achieve it in less time than any other historical leader in the major statistical categories. The opponent is favorable: he has recorded 21 blocks against Burgos in eight games. Madrid, which dominates nearly every offensive and defensive metric in the league, has never lost to Burgos in the regular season (11-0), though the Castilians eliminated them in the 2020 Final Phase. Porfi Fisac's team arrives battered after four consecutive losses in the EuroCup, though they are the closest to the whites in offensive rebounding.

MoraBanc Andorra-Valencia Basket (Sunday, 18:00)

Valencia visits Andorra two days after losing at the Palau and without Nikola Mirotić or Nate Reuvers. TJ Shorts is enjoying a historic start: he has 23 assists in his first 108 minutes of league play without losing a single ball, something no point guard had achieved in Liga Endesa history. His team loses the fewest turnovers and is the best from mid-range, while Andorra is the most accurate from the free-throw line. The Andorrans have Leon Radošević in doubt with a stomach virus and remain without Rafa Luz.

Leyma Coruña-La Laguna Tenerife (Saturday, 21:00)

La Laguna Tenerife, riding a six-game winning streak across league and EuroCup play, visits Riazor with the league's best defense and best three-point percentage. Marcelinho Huertas, who matched Nacho Rodríguez's 737 games last matchday, will become the third player with the most games in Liga Endesa history, behind only Jofresa and Felipe Reyes. It will be his second visit to the Coliseum. The black-and-golds will be without Giedraitis and have Xabi López-Arostegui in doubt. Leyma Coruña, losing only Tomas Dimša, relies on home-court advantage.

Asisa Joventut-Surne Bilbao (Sunday, 12:00)

A clash between two teams that only win at home: Joventut is 2-0 at the Olímpic and 0-3 away; Bilbao is 3-0 at Miribilla and 0-2 on the road. History favors Penya, who have won eight of the last nine Bilbao visits to Badalona. Joventut, the league's best defensive rebounding team, remains without Ante Tomić, Ludde Håkanson, and Boogie Ellis, but could debut Nikola Radičević. Jaume Ponsarnau has his full roster available and returns to the court where he made his debut as Bilbao's head coach with a victory.

Kosner Baskonia-Kids&Us Manresa (Sunday, 17:00)

Baskonia, struggling in the EuroLeague, hosts the only winless team in Liga Endesa. If they lose, Manresa will start 0-6 for the third time in their history. The Vitoria side has won the last six matchups at Buesa Arena, the last one with a historic 23-of-33 from three-point range. At Manresa, Nick Ongenda stands out as the league leader in blocks and dunks in just 17 minutes; Rafa Villar and Timmy Allen are out, and Hugo Benítez is questionable. At Baskonia, 17-year-old Stefan Joksimović has earned regular rotation minutes.

Casademont Zaragoza-FIATC Girona (Saturday, 18:00)

The all-time series could not be more balanced (4-4), though Girona won both matchups last season. Moncho Fernández's team seeks their first road victory and arrives with Mac McClung recovered from three-point range and Jassel Pérez as the league's leading scorer. For Zaragoza, the three-pointer is the barometer: they make 15 in each win and barely 8.5 in each loss. The Zaragoza side loses Caleb Homesley for approximately three weeks with an ankle sprain and have Trae Bell-Haynes in doubt.

UCAM Murcia-iLERNA Lleida (Saturday, 19:30)

UCAM Murcia, fresh off losing their European undefeated record to Peristeri, hosts the team that allows the most points in the league (103.2 per game). Lleida comes off conceding 231 points over two matchdays, though they already surprised with a win at Roig Arena in the opening matchday. Dylan Ennis, with 52 points over the last two matchdays, is the major local threat. UCAM trained with all 15 players, though Raieste is questionable.
