Miami Heat Eyes Klay Thompson to Surround Giannis Antetokounmpo

Miami Heat is looking to continue strengthening its new project around Giannis Antetokounmpo, and one of the names on their agenda is Klay Thompson. According to Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, the Florida franchise has strong interest in the Dallas Mavericks shooting guard.

Miami's plan is clear: add three-point shooting, experience, and off-ball threat to create space for Giannis. In that context, Klay fits both by resume and profile. Although he's no longer in the best moment of his career, he remains one of the greatest shooters in NBA history and a player respected by any defense.

Thompson just completed the 2025-26 season with the Dallas Mavericks, where he averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 69 games. His 38.3% from three-point range was the worst percentage of his career, but he still remained above the league average.

The problem lies in the contract. Klay has a salary of $17.5 million signed for the next season, a difficult figure for Miami. The Heat would need the player to reach a buyout with Dallas and then sign for a lower amount.

For now, the Mavericks don't seem willing to facilitate that path. According to Marc Stein, Dallas would be open to listening to trade offers for Thompson, but is not considering a buyout at this time.

Miami is keeping a close eye on the situation. With Giannis as the new centerpiece of the project, every move is aimed at the same goal: surrounding him with shooting, experience, and players capable of punishing the spaces he creates.
