Monbus Obradoiro adds depth for preseason. The Santiago-based club has reached an agreement with Michael Caicedo for the small forward to join the team's training sessions under head coach Diego Epifanio, the club announced.
It's important to clarify the scope from the outset: the agreement is for one month and its objective is to strengthen training sessions during preparation, not the roster. It's the same formula of a trial player, or simply an invited guest, that is being repeated across half the league these days.
Why Now
The reason is calendar-related. The FIBA window in late August leaves Epifanio without five players: Diogo Brito, Efe Abogidi, Joel Soriano, Leo Meindl, and Caleb Agada, all called up by their national teams. For a newly promoted team making its debut in the competition on September 26, losing a third of the roster in the middle of preparation is a real problem, and Caicedo helps mitigate that.
Who is Caicedo
At 23 years old, the Spanish-Colombian small forward standing 1.98m has a trajectory that promised more. Developed in Barcelona's youth academy, where he made his debut with the senior team, he was included in the ACB's best young quintet in 2023 following his loan to Granada. Then came loans to Girona, Força Lleida, a brief stint at French side Stade Rochelais, and a jump to the G League with the Grand Rapids Gold, where he saw limited action, before finishing last season with Melilla in Primera FEB.
For him, the month in Santiago is also a trial in front of the entire coaching staff: if he impresses and a need arises, no one is better positioned. And if not, he will have stayed in shape in an ACB context while searching for his next destination.
