Mike James Undergoes Achilles Surgery: 7-9 Months Out

Por ·

The worst-case scenario has been confirmed. Mike James underwent surgery Friday to repair the Achilles tendon he injured the previous night in Belgrade and will be sidelined for seven to nine months, according to Anadolu Efes. In practical terms, the point guard will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season.

The Turkish club detailed that the procedure was performed by Dr. Kerem Ulku and included an assessment from team physician Ugur Dilicikik: "Depending on the course of his postoperative treatment, our player is expected to be out between seven and nine months".

Twenty-Four Hours From Injury to Surgery

On Thursday, when James was carried out on a stretcher from Belgrade Arena, Efes only confirmed an Achilles tendon injury and avoided specifying the severity. The repair surgery, twenty-four hours later, answered that question: the tendon was torn.

It happened in the final minutes of the third quarter of Efes's loss to Red Star (77-72) in the third matchday of the EuroLeague. It was a non-contact play: he went for a loose ball, collapsed, and grabbed the lower part of his right leg. He had played 22:30 with 11 points and three assists.

What the Competition Loses

James is the all-time leading scorer in EuroLeague history and was beginning his thirteenth season in the competition. He was the 2024 MVP and arrived in Istanbul this summer after five seasons with Monaco, in the last of which he averaged 16.5 points, 6.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.9 steals.

His European journey, moreover, began in Spain: he played for Baskonia between 2014 and 2016 before stints at Panathinaikos (2016-18), Olimpia Milano (2018-19), CSKA Moscow (2019-21), and Monaco. Few players have left their mark at so many different destinations across the continent.

An Uncertainty That Extends Beyond This Season

The timeline raises an uncomfortable question. James will turn 37 next summer and signed a one-year deal with Efes with an option for a second year. If recovery takes the full nine months, his return to the court would come near the start of the 2027-28 season, at age 37 and with an Achilles tear behind him—the injury that has historically most affected players who depend on their first step.

No one at Efes has mentioned retirement and there's no reason to jump ahead: there have been players who have returned from this injury at similar ages. But it's clear that what was supposed to be the end of his European career has just changed shape.

Efes Without Its Primary Playmaker

For the Turkish club, the blow is structural. James arrived to be the man to turn to in tight finishes, and Efes is left without that resource in the first month of competition, with an injury list that already included Isaia Cordinier—who underwent surgery in May—and Georgios Papagiannis, sidelined with a torn ACL since October 2025.

The team had started with a win over Real Madrid (94-84) before falling in Belgrade. Now it must rebuild its playmaking with what it has or go to the market, and in October the European market offers less than a club with these urgent needs requires.

What Belgrade's Night Left Behind

There was a detail that explains the player's stature. When James left on a stretcher, Belgrade Arena—a venue that gives nothing away to opponents—first fell silent and then sent him off with an ovation. Throughout Thursday and Friday, messages of support multiplied from clubs and players across the competition.

It is the recognition reserved for someone who has been, for a decade, one of the names that sold tickets in Europe.
