Monbus Obradoiro Dominates Súper Agropal Palencia (81-53) to Stay in Title Contention Ahead of Derby
abr 05 2026Monbus Obradoiro hosted Súper Agropal Palencia in what has become a classic matchup over the last two seasons of the Primera FEB. The Palentian side eliminated the Compostelans in last season's playoffs and in this year's Copa. The team coached by Natxo Lezcano arrived with the best winning streak in the competition, having won 11 consecutive games, including a major victory over Leyma Coruña that has put Obra back in control of their own destiny. The intensity of today's clash was expected from the start, and Epi's team would have to deal with the pressure of needing to win before next week's derby. The first quarter was a true battle, but in the following quarters the Santiago side found their offensive rhythm while maintaining an even more solid defense than the league's best defensive team. Obra pulled away in the second quarter and finished the game in the third, holding Palencia to just 9 points.
Defense and physical play make scoring in the paint nearly impossible (13-10)
The game started with a big three-pointer from Jakovics, as if to confirm that the former Leyma player wants his old team's promotion. The final 13-10 score was a clear indication of what this first quarter had been like.
Westermann and Brito lead Compostelans' breakaway (37-23)
The second quarter started with the same intensity and high level of contact. Kravic made a free throw and then a hook shot to put the home team up six. Kamba made his debut with a two-pointer and Westermann with a three-pointer. The Frenchman was taking over this stretch of the game, recovering on defense and scoring again from three-point range, prompting Lezcano to call timeout (22-12). Kamba made a three after the timeout, but Brito answered back, maintaining double-digit lead. Westermann continued leading and found Dos Anjos for the first time for the Brazilian's dunk. Obra's giant repeated after receiving an assist from Brito and prompted another Palencia timeout. Epi benched the French point guard, but reversed the decision with Quintela's second foul. Brito continued to be sharp and made his second three-pointer to become the game's leading scorer with 10 points. Obradoiro's defense blocked two consecutive Palencia attacks and forced a traveling violation on the third attempt. Lezcano's team was scoring less than a point per minute at the six-minute mark with just five points. An unsportsmanlike foul by Galán while falling gave the visitors some relief, although Vrankic made his debut making just one free throw, but compensated by assisting Jakovics for a two-pointer. Sergi Quintela opened his scoring with a great penetration and Barcello did so by drawing a foul, but missed his second free throw. Epi stayed on top of everything and benched the American again to avoid a third foul, bringing Brito back in. Borg was awarded a basket for illegal defense. Quintela's third foul sent him to the bench and Wintering to the free-throw line to continue cutting into the lead by making both. Barrueta appeared again and made two free throws forced by a great offensive rebound. Borg also took advantage of the bonus, though making just one free throw.
Monbus Obradoiro's defense practically ends the game (59-32)
Monbus Obradoiro started the second half in the best possible way with Barrueta making his fourth three-pointer. The intensity remained at very high levels and the crowd was unhappy with the referees' calls, seeing their team called for three fouls while Palencia had none. Despite that, they increased their lead with a basket from Dos Anjos while keeping Lezcano's team scoreless, who received a technical foul. Barcello made the free throw and Barrueta his fifth three-pointer to prompt another Palencia timeout (46-23). A great steal by Westermann, with an assist from the floor to Galán, energized the crowd even more, who jumped to their feet with another dunk from Dos Anjos to answer a basket from Kamba, which was the only visiting score so far. Obra dominated completely and the Caldeira continued boiling with a three-point play from Barcello. A block by Andersson on Wintering continued to get the Obradoiro fans applauding and celebrating. Barrueta reached 19 points with a layup after recovering the ball on defense and Súper Agropal got its second score of the quarter through Wintering, but Dos Anjos answered quickly. Álvaro Muñoz made a great three-point play to sign the seventh visiting point of the quarter. A good sideline play allowed Etxeguren to make his debut by making his second free throw. Vucetic did exactly the same. The former Obra captain had free throws again, but like his teammates made only the second. Sergi Quintela closed the scoring with one of his typical penetrations.
Barcello shines in a relaxed final quarter (81-53)
Álvaro Muñoz opened the final quarter while positioning himself as the leading visiting scorer with 9 points. Armus made his debut to make it 0-4. With the game decided, Obra relaxed a bit and Palencia recovered with a 4-10 run with Jakovics as the protagonist, but baskets from Brito and Barcello kept the lead above twenty. Another basket from the former Leyma point guard and a three-pointer from Manu Rodríguez prompted Epi to call timeout. Barcello made an easy basket and Obra forced a turnover on defense. Barcello repeated, though this time with a difficult shot. Dos Anjos made the first of his free throws and Obra fought hard for the rebound on the second, showing great effort. Vrankic got his first basket in play, while Barcello continued on fire and reached 13 points. Brito surpassed him in scoring by making both his free throws. Dos Anjos assisted Galán in minutes with Alonso Grela on the court. Wintering and Dos Anjos exchanged baskets and Brito continued adding points. The Portuguese player had the chance to tie Barrueta as the leading scorer with three free throws, but missed the second. Wintering continued padding his stats, while the home team already had their minds on next week's derby.
