The award confirms Flagg's excellent NBA debut. At just 19 years old, he averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game, leading Dallas in points, rebounds, assists and steals. No rookie had accomplished the same feat since Michael Jordan in the 1984-85 season. That statistic further underscores the value of an outstanding campaign despite the Mavericks' collective struggles.
The Rookie of the Year race was one of the closest in recent times. Just 26 points separated Flagg from Knueppel in the final voting conducted by journalists and specialized analysts. The Charlotte Hornets wing also had a strong season with averages of 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists, plus he led the entire NBA in three-pointers made with 273. His performance was key in helping Charlotte significantly improve its results and reach the play-in tournament.
