CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers responded with authority against the Miami Heat, securing a dominant 149-128 victory on Friday night in NBA action, powered by Max Strus's 29 points, Evan Mobley's 23 points, and the return of Jarrett Allen, who contributed 18 points after missing ten games due to injury.
The game shifted in Cleveland's favor early. The Cavaliers took control from the opening quarter with an offensive explosion led by Max Strus, who repeatedly punished Miami from beyond the arc. The shooting guard delivered a spectacular first half with 22 points and made six of his eight three-pointers before halftime. His final three-pointer, just before the second quarter buzzer, left the score at 81-46 and confirmed the Cavaliers' best-scoring first half of the entire season.
With that offensive momentum, Cleveland built a lead as large as 35 points. The team's ball movement also found Evan Mobley, who was solid throughout the game with 23 points, while Jarrett Allen contributed 18 in his return after overcoming a knee tendinitis that had kept him sidelined for ten games.
The 27-year-old center's return had an immediate impact on both ends of the floor. His absence had particularly weakened the team's interior defense and had also slowed the development of chemistry with James Harden, acquired by Cleveland at the trade deadline to bolster the team's championship aspirations.
Harden posted his best assist total with the Cavaliers, dishing out 14 assists to go along with 17 points. Donovan Mitchell, meanwhile, had a difficult shooting night, finishing with six points on 1-of-10 from the field.
Miami attempted a comeback when the game appeared decided. After falling behind by 36 points, the Florida team cut the deficit to 101-82 thanks to a three-pointer by Jaime Jaquez Jr., who led the visiting offense with 20 points. Bam Adebayo added 14 points and 16 rebounds, but the comeback fell short of changing the game's trajectory.
Cleveland responded quickly and extended its lead before the end of the third quarter, when Keon Ellis hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 109-87, effectively putting the game out of reach before the final twelve minutes.
The victory allowed Cleveland to avenge a loss suffered two days earlier against Miami, 120-103, and also tied the franchise record for points in a regulation game.
For Miami, the loss also has implications in the standings. The team fell from a three-way tie for eighth place in the Eastern Conference to tenth place, surpassed by the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets, who did not play on this matchday.
