Paolo Banchero Strikes First as Orlando Magic Stuns Detroit Pistons 112-101 in Game 1
DETROIT — Orlando Magic defeated Detroit Pistons 112-101 in Game 1 of the first round of the NBA playoffs, securing a valuable road victory led by Paolo Banchero, who recorded 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. The eighth seed's triumph extends Detroit's worst playoff home losing streak in franchise history, now at 11 consecutive losses since 2008.
The opening of the game made clear that Orlando Magic arrived with better competitive rhythm after winning the play-in, while Detroit Pistons showed rust from a week without playing. The visiting team came out with defensive intensity and capitalized on turnovers to build an 18-5 lead midway through the first quarter. The Pistons made just one of their first six shots and committed four turnovers in that stretch.
Detroit responded as the minutes passed and managed to cut it to two points, but Orlando closed out the period strong. Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs set the offensive tone and combined for 20 points in the first quarter to push the score to 35-27.
In the second quarter, Detroit Pistons found better offensive rhythm thanks to the talent of Cade Cunningham, who sustained the home team throughout the night. Still, Orlando Magic maintained composure and went into halftime ahead 55-51.
After the break, a local awakening seemed to be coming. However, Orlando struck first again with eight of the first nine points of the second half. When Detroit responded with a 10-point run and tied the game at 65 on a three-pointer by Cunningham, the visitors didn't fall apart.
Paolo Banchero appeared again, responding with an outside shot over Jalen Duren, before Desmond Bane connected on a three-pointer against Cunningham. That sequence returned control to Orlando Magic, who closed the third quarter with an 81-74 advantage.
In the final period, Franz Wagner took over to seal the game. The German scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, stifling any comeback attempt by Detroit Pistons. Orlando managed the lead with maturity and secured a hugely valuable playoff victory.
Beyond Banchero's 23 points, Orlando Magic got contributions from Desmond Bane and Wendell Carter Jr., both with 17 points, while Jalen Suggs added 16. For Detroit Pistons, Cade Cunningham shined with a playoff career-high 39 points, accompanied by 17 from Tobias Harris, though the rest of the roster lacked production.
Orlando Magic steals home-court advantage and takes a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference. Detroit Pistons will look to respond Wednesday in Game 2 to avoid an even more difficult situation.
