NBA Rumors: Detroit Pistons Explore Market for Second Star Alongside Cade Cunningham

The tough elimination at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers has made it clear in Detroit that the project still needs another leap to truly compete for the championship. Despite completing an excellent regular season and reaching 60 wins, the Pistons once again fell short of the NBA Finals, something that could push the franchise to make aggressive moves this summer.

With Cade Cunningham established as the absolute leader of the project, the priority in the front office is now to find a top-tier piece that elevates the team's competitive ceiling. In that context, names of enormous weight are beginning to emerge around the Michigan franchise.

One of them is Lauri Markkanen. The Finnish center would fit perfectly into Detroit's offensive structure due to his ability to space the floor, generate from the perimeter, and provide size without losing mobility. However, the situation in Utah doesn't seem straightforward for a possible trade, especially following the Jazz's recent moves aimed at building a more competitive team around their main stars.

Another name beginning to be linked with the Pistons is Kawhi Leonard. The Los Angeles Clippers star is in the final stretch of his contract and the future of the Los Angeles franchise is once again surrounded by uncertainty. Although the physical factor remains a constant unknown, Leonard's impact when healthy continues to be that of one of the most impactful players in the entire NBA.

Detroit also has room to construct a significant deal. The franchise retains its future first-round picks and has enough draft assets to enter relevant conversations during the summer.

The objective seems clear: prevent the Pistons' growth from stalling and surround Cunningham as soon as possible with another reference capable of turning the team into a real contender within the Eastern Conference.
