OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Detroit Pistons 114-110 in overtime in the NBA, led by a stellar performance from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 47 points. The Canadian point guard led Oklahoma City in a closely contested game and allowed the Thunder to reach 60 wins this season, solidifying their lead in the Western Conference.
The game started with the Detroit Pistons competing despite numerous absences in their regular lineup. Without Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Tobias Harris, and Duncan Robinson, the visiting team maintained the pace of the game through collective effort. Paul Reed posted 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Javonte Green added 19 points and Kevin Huerter contributed 17.
The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the fourth quarter with a slim 79-74 advantage, but Detroit responded in the decisive stretch. A three-pointer by Daniss Jenkins put the Pistons ahead 97-90 with less than four minutes remaining, threatening an upset on the NBA schedule.
That's when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took over. The Thunder point guard scored six consecutive points to bring Oklahoma City closer, and shortly after, Jaylin Williams connected on a corner three-pointer to tie the game at 99-99. In the final seconds of regulation, Gilgeous-Alexander stole the ball when Detroit had possession with the score tied at 101, though a subsequent attempt by Shai was negated by an offensive foul. Jenkins' long three-pointer at the buzzer didn't fall, and the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took over again. The Oklahoma City Thunder leader scored 8 of his team's 13 points in overtime, sealing a hard-fought victory against a combative Detroit Pistons team.
The reigning MVP finished with 47 points, shooting 12 of 19 from the field and 21 of 25 from the free throw line, while extending his NBA record to 136 consecutive games scoring at least 20 points.
With this NBA victory, the Oklahoma City Thunder become the first team to reach 60 wins this season and also string together 15 wins in their last 16 games, maintaining a two-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs atop the Western Conference.
