NBA: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Wins Second Consecutive MVP Award

Oklahoma City Thunder continues its era of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dominance. The Canadian star was named NBA MVP for the second consecutive season on Sunday, solidifying himself as the league's premier player after leading the defending champion to another spectacular campaign.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander becomes the 14th player in NBA history to win the MVP award in consecutive seasons and the 18th player with at least two MVP awards.

The Oklahoma City Thunder leader closes another extraordinary season both collectively and individually. The team led by Mark Daigneault finished once again as one of the NBA's dominant forces and enters the Western Conference Finals undefeated with a spectacular 8-0 playoff record.

The MVP award further confirms the growing international dominance of the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, born in Canada, extends to eight consecutive seasons the streak of players born outside the United States winning the award. Before the Canadian, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Joel Embiid had also recently dominated the voting.

The MVP race was again marked by the exceptional level of international stars. Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama accompanied Gilgeous-Alexander as finalists, marking the fifth consecutive season in which the top three vote-getters were born outside the United States.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander again stood out particularly for his consistency and ability to dominate clutch moments. The Thunder star also won the Clutch Player of the Year award this season after receiving 96 of 100 possible first-place votes, confirming his enormous impact in decisive minutes.

Statistically, Gilgeous-Alexander finished the regular season with 31.1 points per game, second only to Luka Doncic. Additionally, he extended his historic streak of consecutive games scoring at least 20 points to 140 games.

His style remains one of the most distinctive and effective in the entire NBA. Shai dominates from mid-range, draws fouls consistently, and maintains almost absolute emotional control even in the most tense moments of each game.

As Oklahoma City Thunder prepares to begin the Western Conference Finals against San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama, Adam Silver will officially present Gilgeous-Alexander with his third major individual trophy in just one year on Monday: 2025 MVP, 2025 NBA Finals MVP, and now 2026 MVP.

Nikola Jokic, despite posting another historic season with a triple-double average, again came up short of the award. The Serbian star averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.7 assists, leading the NBA in both rebounds and assists, but it was not enough to overcome Gilgeous-Alexander's collective and competitive impact.
