Victor Wembanyama Dominates Again as San Antonio Spurs Take 2-1 Series Lead Over Minnesota Timberwolves (115-108)
MINNEAPOLIS. The San Antonio Spurs continue their ascent in the Western Conference semifinals, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 115-108 to take a 2-1 series lead in the NBA playoffs. Victor Wembanyama delivered another dominant performance with 39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks, leading the Spurs to another impressive display in Minneapolis.
The French star once again made all the difference on both ends of the floor. Wembanyama shot a spectacular 13 of 18 from the field and added a perfect 10 of 12 from the free throw line, dominating the paint and constantly disrupting Minnesota's interior offense.
San Antonio Spurs have now won two consecutive games after losing the series opener at home and regain home-court advantage before Game 4, which will also be played in Minneapolis.
The Spurs came out hot from the opening tip. The Texas squad showed far more aggression and capitalized on a disastrous start from Minnesota, which missed its first 12 field goal attempts and didn't score until Rudy Gobert converted an offensive rebound more than six minutes into the game.
San Antonio took advantage of that offensive collapse to quickly build a 18-3 run, led by an unstoppable Victor Wembanyama near the basket.
However, unlike the blowout loss in Game 2, the Minnesota Timberwolves did respond this time with defensive intensity and physicality. Anthony Edwards showed a surprising recovery from his knee injury and kept the home team afloat offensively with an enormous first half.
The shooting guard finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds, scoring 22 points before halftime. Edwards brought energy back to Target Center with a spectacular three-pointer at the buzzer from well beyond nine meters to close out the first quarter.
Minnesota continued to grow defensively and completely evened the game by halftime. Jaden McDaniels tied the game at 51 with a corner three-pointer on the final possession of the second quarter, completing the home team's comeback after their terrible start.
But after the break, the best offensive version of the San Antonio Spurs returned. Gregg Popovich's team punished from beyond the arc and went 6 of 10 from three-point range during the third quarter, regaining control of the game.
Stephon Castle once again played a fundamental role in running the offense and finished with 13 points and 12 assists, plus the team's best plus-minus at +17. De'Aaron Fox added 17 points and was there in the crucial moments alongside Wembanyama.
Minnesota managed to stay alive into the final stretch thanks to their defensive effort. With 6:18 remaining, Jaden McDaniels drew Wembanyama's fifth personal foul and cut the deficit to 99-98 from the free throw line.
However, Victor Wembanyama responded like a true superstar. Far from shying away despite the foul trouble risk, the Frenchman scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and completely controlled the game's outcome.
The decisive play came with just over three minutes remaining. After a Naz Reid three-pointer that brought Minnesota closer, Wembanyama immediately answered with another outside shot to restore San Antonio's six-point lead and silence the home crowd once again.
The Frenchman's defensive impact was also crucial. Both Jaden McDaniels and Julius Randle struggled to finish near the basket, combining for a poor 8 of 34 from the field, heavily affected by Wembanyama's constant presence in the paint.
San Antonio Spurs continue to establish themselves as one of the major threats in these NBA playoffs and will travel to Game 4 with the opportunity to take a dangerous 3-1 series lead against a Minnesota Timberwolves team forced to respond again at home.
