Néstor 'Ché' García Named New Head Coach of Dreamland Gran Canaria

Argentine head coach Néstor 'Ché' García arrives on the island to take over Dreamland Gran Canaria following Jaka Lakovic's dismissal

Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria has reached an agreement with Néstor 'Ché' García for the Argentine professional to become the new head coach of the first team through the end of the season.

Born in Bahía Blanca on January 11, 1965, Néstor García is an experienced head coach with extensive experience in Latin American basketball at both club and national team levels, having coached Venezuela, Argentina, and the Dominican Republic.

He has developed much of his career in Latin American basketball, accumulating titles in an enviable trophy cabinet. He has been champion in Argentina (with Peñarol de Mar de Plata and San Lorenzo), Venezuela (with Trotamundos Carabobo and Marinos de Anzoátegui), and Uruguay (with Club Biguá de Villa Biarritz). He also won international championships, becoming champion of the FIBA South American Club Championship in 2008 (with Club Biguá de Villa Biarritz) and the Americas League in 2016 (with Guaros de Lara).

Additionally, as Argentina's national team coach, he won the FIBA South American Championship in 2012, a title he repeated as head coach of Venezuela's national team in 2014 and 2016. With the Venezuelan team, he also won the 2015 AmeriCup, the greatest achievement in Venezuelan basketball history, defeating Argentina's Nocioni, Scola, and Campazzo 76-71 in the final. This title secured a historic qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with Venezuela. He was also able to lead the Dominican Republic to two FIBA World Cups, in 2019 and 2023, among the greatest achievements in Dominican basketball history.

Characterized by his motivational ability and leadership, his excellent work in South American basketball earned him a call from Montakit Fuenlabrada to coach the team in the 2017/18 season. He quickly adapted to Spanish basketball, posting the best start in the club's Liga Endesa history and leading them to the 2018 Copa del Rey held in Gran Canaria as the top seed, finishing the season with a 17-17 record, the second-best in Fuenlabrada's history in the elite division.

Néstor 'Ché' García now becomes the head coach of Dreamland Gran Canaria for the final nine Liga Endesa games. His arrival on the island is scheduled for Thursday, and he will be presented to the media on Friday morning at Gran Canaria Arena.
