Nikola Mirotic Contemplates Retirement as Baskonia Explores Situation

The strangest summer of Nikola Mirotic's career could end in the most unexpected way. The power forward is considering retiring, according to reports published this Sunday. No decision has been made, but retirement is among the serious options he is weighing.

How We Got Here
We reported it a month ago: Mirotic's problem isn't about level—it's about fit. He signed with Monaco in July 2025 on a two-year deal plus one at €2.4 million annually, a figure that placed him among the continent's highest-paid players. But the Monegasque club decided to take a step back and dismantled its roster through exit agreements, leaving him caught in that operation.

Since then, the market has offered him nothing that works. A 35-year-old player who will turn 36 in February, with a reference salary above two million euros and the ambition to compete for titles, has few realistic doors: clubs that can afford him have closed rosters, and those with openings can't pay him.

The Baskonia Case
The Vitoria club's interest aligns with what we already suggested back then. Sportively, Mirotic would be an acquisition of another caliber for the team, especially with the recent departure of Khalifa Diop to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which has left the frontcourt short just three weeks before the league season starts.

The obstacle is the same as always: the club's salary structure cannot accommodate a player of this profile, unless he accepted a substantial pay cut, as Nando de Colo did in his day. That Baskonia merely "inquired about his situation" indicates precisely that: a probe to see if conditions have changed, not a negotiation.

What's at Stake
If he ultimately retires, one of the most decisive players in European basketball over the past decade would be leaving. Mirotic was EuroLeague MVP in 2022, has won three Liga Endesa titles, a Scudetto with Olimpia Milano, and gold at the 2015 Eurobasket with Spain, in addition to spending seven seasons in the NBA.
