A dominant Panathinaikos side swept through the Palau in one of the toughest nights in recent Barcelona memory. Ergin Ataman's team cruised to a commanding 79-93 victory over the Blaugrana. Cedi Osman led the Greeks with 21 points. Barcelona managed to stay competitive for one quarter but had little answer for Greek superiority. Xavi Pascual's squad must improve significantly to maintain their EuroLeague playoff hopes.
The game started at a frantic pace. Panathinaikos, with an excellent Cedi Osman, took early leads (7-12 at the 5-minute mark). The Turkish star's opening was nothing short of spectacular. After making two free throws, Osman was already at nine points. Meanwhile, for Barcelona, only Kevin Punter (5 points) was scoring with ease.
The physicality of Ataman's squad was far superior, and gradually the gap widened. A Juancho Hernangómez fast break and a three-pointer from the omnipresent Osman set off alarms at the Palau (10-20 at the 7-minute mark).
Barcelona couldn't get into rhythm. Turnovers and offensive mistakes piled up. Xavi Pascual shuffled his lineup searching for a spark—and found it in Norris (6 points) and Cale, who hit three consecutive three-pointers to bring his team closer. The first quarter ended 23-27 for the visitors. The Blaugrana had managed to weather the initial storm. The noise level rose at the Palau.
Panathinaikos didn't panic. In fact, their start to the second quarter was a statement of intent. A 2-11 run, capped by a T.J. Shorts jump shot, sent the Greeks flying again (25-38 at the 13-minute mark). Barcelona was relying heavily on outside shooting, doubling their three-point attempts over two-pointers (14 to 8).
As in the first quarter, Barcelona turned to an unlikely hero, Miles Norris (13 points). His three-pointers kept the Blaugrana alive, but they couldn't stop the endless resources of the Greek squad. Ataman's team's final two minutes before halftime were of exceptional quality. Pristine ball movement and a hot Juancho Hernangómez (12 points) left a clear 38-55 at the half. The Catalans needed major changes if they wanted to win.
After the break, Barcelona played with pride, but they faced a superior team. With Satoransky sidelined, Xavi Pascual was forced to move Darío Brizuela to point guard. A Kostas Sloukas three-pointer (9 points) made it +21 for the visitors (44-65 at the 25-minute mark). Ataman's team had the game under control.
Panathinaikos gave Barcelona no respite, and the Blaugrana collapsed completely. A three-pointer from an outstanding Cedi Osman, combined with a reverse dunk from former Barcelona player Nigel Hayes-Davis, sealed the game (46-77 at the 29-minute mark). A final three-pointer from Hayes-Davis closed the third quarter. The beating Barcelona was taking was severe (49-80 at the 30-minute mark). The game was decided. Fans at the Palau began to leave.
The final period lacked drama. Worth noting was the determination of Joel Parra (18 points), whose efforts helped salvage the final score. Panathinaikos dominated the boards (32-17) and coasted in the final minutes. Despite that, a clear visiting victory, 79-93.
