Payton Pritchard Extends Contract with Celtics Through 2030

Por ·

Payton Pritchard has evolved from a reserve point guard to a key piece the Boston Celtics want to keep. The team has offered him a two-year extension worth $44.2 million, according to Shams Charania. With two years remaining on his four-year deal signed in 2024, Pritchard is now locked in with Boston through 2029-30. The final year includes a mutual option allowing both sides to renegotiate or part ways.

The extension rewards consistent progression. The Celtics selected him 26th overall in the 2020 draft from the University of Oregon, and he has improved his numbers year after year. He was instrumental in the 2024 championship run, jumped from 9.3 to 14.3 points per game in 2024-25 and won Sixth Man of the Year. Last season he took another leap: 17 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 32.3 minutes—all career highs.

A Point Guard Playing 32 Minutes

The contract reflects how Pritchard's role has changed. He's no longer the spark plug coming off the bench to launch three-pointers: last season he played over 32 minutes per game and was one of the team's primary playmakers. With this extension, the Celtics, where Spanish player Hugo González also plays, secure a homegrown talent at an average of roughly $22 million per season.
