PALMA. Leyma Coruña closed out the Primera FEB regular season with a hard-fought victory over Fibwi Mallorca Básquet Palma 76-94 at Son Moix. The Galician squad, led by Dídac Cuevas, Caio Pacheco, and Mus Barro, fulfilled their obligation and now must wait for a Monbus Obradoiro stumble on the final matchday to celebrate promotion.
Leyma Coruña came out determined to avoid any speculation from the opening tip. Strahinja Micovic opened the scoring with composure in the paint and the game quickly became a physical battle under the boards. Laron Smith kept Fibwi Palma afloat with his team's first ten points, but Mus Barro responded with authority to keep the Galicians ahead.
The squad directed by Carles Marco began to impose the rhythm that has worked best for them all season. Quick possessions, constant transition, and aggressive defense after turnovers. The depth of the roster also made a difference from the first quarter. Diop brought energy near the rim and a spectacular alley-oop finished by Abdou Thiam off an assist from Dídac Cuevas pushed the orange team's lead to 13-23.
Caio Pacheco continued punishing from penetration and Leyma Coruña closed the first quarter with very positive feelings and a clear advantage (15-25). Everything seemed headed for a comfortable afternoon at Son Moix, especially when Mus Barro extended the lead to 20-34 in the second quarter.
However, Fibwi Mallorca Básquet Palma reacted when things looked worst. The Balearic team adjusted to a zone defense, tightened the paint, and began finding success from three-point range. Scariolo and Matulionis ignited the home team from the perimeter, while Leyma Coruña entered an unexpected offensive drought.
The Galicians could barely score two baskets in the final seven minutes before halftime and Palma took advantage of the moment to get back into the game. Three-pointers from Matulionis and Niang cut the deficit to minimal and a final putback by Brian Vázquez left the score at a concerning 37-40 at the break.
Tension increased even more after the halftime break. Matulionis and Scariolo completed the Balearic comeback and Fibwi Palma even took the lead (47-42) after a strong start also led by Brian Vázquez and Bracey. For a few minutes, the ghosts of Leyma Coruña's recent loss in Fuenlabrada reappeared.
But the Galician team reacted just in time. Dídac Cuevas took responsibility and changed the course of the game with a crucial three-pointer and firm direction in moments of maximum pressure. Guillem Jou also appeared from beyond the arc and together they restored confidence to a Leyma Coruña that quickly regained control.
Mus Barro continued imposing his interior presence, while Thiam and Brnovic sustained the physical work near the rim. The orange squad closed the third quarter with a very valuable advantage (58-64) after a stretch that restored stability to the visitors.
In the final period, Leyma Coruña finished breaking open the game. Caio Pacheco led the offense with personality, Barro and Jorgensen secured points from the free throw line, and Coruña's defense definitively raised the level to open an insurmountable gap for Fibwi Palma.
The Balearic team found no answer in the final stretch and Carles Marco's squad finished closing out a victory of enormous competitive value. Diop's ejection for a flagrant foul was one of the few negative notes in an outcome that allowed Leyma Coruña to reach their 28th win in 32 games.
Leyma Coruña thus finishes the Primera FEB regular season having done all their homework and keeping their direct promotion hopes to the Liga ACB alive. Now, the Galician squad will rest on the final matchday and must wait for a Monbus Obradoiro stumble to know if promotion can be celebrated before a possible Final Four.
