TORRELAVEGA — Monbus Obradoiro took a giant step toward returning to the ACB with a commanding 65-95 victory over Grupo Alega Cantabria in Primera FEB. Head coach Diego Epifanio's squad controlled the game from start to finish and now sits just one win—or one Leyma Coruña loss—away from securing promotion to Spain's top basketball division. Alex Barrueta, Léo Westermann, and Quintela led a dominant Obradoiro performance on both ends of the floor.
The matchup began with Grupo Alega Cantabria firing on all cylinders, using their home crowd's energy to jump out to a quick 5-1 lead. For several minutes, the Cantabrian squad maintained their offensive rhythm and held small advantages on the scoreboard, even reaching 19-14 midway through the first quarter.
However, Monbus Obradoiro responded swiftly. The Santiago-based team elevated their defensive intensity, began controlling the glass, and found better offensive opportunities. Two free throws from Quintela gave the visitors their first lead at 21-22, marking the turning point of the game. A closing 0-5 run allowed the Galicians to finish the first quarter ahead 21-28.
From that point forward, Monbus Obradoiro took complete control of the contest. The second quarter opened with another favorable run that extended the lead to eleven points (21-32). Lapornik tried to keep Grupo Alega Cantabria in the game with a three-pointer, but Barrueta answered immediately from beyond the arc to maintain Compostelano control.
Diego Epifanio's squad moved the ball fluidly and punished every defensive miscue from their opponents. Westermann dictated the game's pace while Barrueta continued to hurt them from three-point range. The visiting dominance was absolute, forcing local head coach Lorenzo Encinas to call a timeout in search of a reaction that never materialized.
Far from slowing the Galician offensive onslaught, the timeout barely changed the script. Another Barrueta three-pointer pushed the lead to sixteen points, and a dunk from Galán capped off a spectacular first half for Monbus Obradoiro, who headed into halftime with a commanding 34-53 advantage.
After the break, Grupo Alega Cantabria attempted to get back into the game with a basket from Yu, but Obradoiro responded immediately with a three-point play from Galán that extinguished any comeback hopes. Barrueta continued punishing from three and pushed the lead to 36-61, reflecting the visitors' overwhelming superiority.
Although Lapornik was the only local player capable of maintaining any offensive production, the Santiago squad never relinquished control. Monbus Obradoiro managed the game's pace with maturity, moving the ball with purpose and capitalizing on opponent turnovers to maintain leads exceeding twenty points throughout the entire third quarter.
With the score at 56-72 entering the final period, the game was completely decided. Andersson opened the decisive stretch from the free-throw line, and Barrueta appeared once again from three-point range to extend the advantage even further. Grupo Alega Cantabria ultimately succumbed to the physical superiority and offensive efficiency of a surging Obradoiro squad heading toward the ACB.
Monbus Obradoiro thus secured a victory of enormous importance in Primera FEB and now stands just one step away from confirming promotion. Either a loss by Leyma Coruña this Sunday against Fibwi Mallorca Bàsquet Palma or another Compostelano triumph in the final matchday against Gipuzkoa Basket will seal the return of the historic Galician club to Spain's basketball elite.
