Sergi Martínez Renews with Bàsquet Girona Through 2028

Bàsquet Girona captain Sergi Martínez has signed a contract extension to remain with the club for the next two seasons through 2027/2028

Sergi Martínez Costa (Rubí, 10/05/1999) has signed a two-year renewal with Bàsquet Girona through the 2027/2028 season. Martínez arrived on loan to Bàsquet Girona in the 2023/24 season where he plays small forward and power forward. With the Girona squad, he has accumulated 86 games played in the ACB out of 169 total. This season, the player averages 7.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game in the 27 matchups he has played, with an average rating of 8.9.

With this renewal, Bàsquet Girona ensures the continuity of one of the pillars of the locker room and a reference both on and off the court. The club reinforces its commitment to a sports project based on continuity, leadership and talent. The club celebrates the renewal of its captain, a key piece in Bàsquet Girona's consolidation in the ACB.

His best-rated game this season was at Fontajau against La Laguna Tenerife, where he recorded 20 points, 7 rebounds and a rating of 27.

Martínez has been an international with the Spanish national team in the U-16, U-17, U-18, U-20 and senior categories. His first call-up to the senior national team came in June 2021 in the preparatory matches for the Tokyo Olympics. He made his debut against Iran and played again days later against the same opponent. In that last FIBA window he was called up and played both matches against Ukraine; in the second, he recorded 8 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist in 18 minutes.

His achievements with the youth national teams include bronze at the Latvia U-16 European Championship in 2014, silver at the Slovakia U-18 European Championship in 2017 and silver at the Israel U-20 European Championship in 2019.

At the 2016 U-17 World Championship held in Zaragoza, he was included in the All-Tournament Team, with Spain finishing in fourth place. Sergi Martínez led the team in several statistics, finishing fourth in points per game and second in rebounds across the entire championship.

Statement from Fernando San Emeterio, sports director: "We are pleased with Sergi Martínez's renewal because, since he arrived in Girona, he has strongly identified with the club and the city. For us, he also exemplifies many of the values we want in the team. He spares no effort on the court, puts team interests ahead of personal ones, and is the type of player who makes those around him function better. Additionally, I believe he is evolving positively in aspects of his game that he is working on, and his ceiling is still to come."
