Smith's three-pointer with one second remaining gave Boca an 83-81 win over San Martín de Corrientes, putting the series at 2-0. Boca led by 20 at one point, but San Martín mounted a comeback and entered the fourth quarter with an 8-point advantage. The series continues in Corrientes on Thursday.
With two layups from Barreiro and two three-pointers from Smith, Boca opened with a 10-0 run against a disoriented San Martín. García and Méndez suffered under the full-court pressure of Scala and Stenta, which prevented San Martín from advancing and running their offense. San Martín failed to score in the first four minutes, prompting their coach to call a timeout. Finally, with 5:12 remaining in the quarter, the Corrientes team got on the board with a floater from Moreira, making it 13-2.
Local head coach Nicolás Casalanguida rotated his starters with a 17-point lead: 21-4 at 3:37. Boca increased their intensity after building a 20-point advantage (26-6). Thanks to Moreira's effort, San Martín cut into the deficit and closed the quarter to just 12: 28-16. San Martín's momentum continued into the second quarter. They got within 8 and had a chance to cut it to 6: 30-22. But Faggiano hit a three-pointer to extend it to 11, and San Martín called timeout at 7:10. Boca tried to control the onslaught by looking for Caffaro, but committed their third foul. San Martín moved the ball and continued chipping away, closing the half at 45-43.
Two three-pointers from Méndez gave the visitors their first lead of the game. But Berra committed his fourth foul, as did Moreira, forcing San Martín to regroup and play without their big men. Méndez and Gilleto, with their three-pointers—6 of 7 attempts in the quarter—kept San Martín ahead and extended their lead to close the quarter up 67-61.
The Corrientes team climbed to 8, 71-63, and then Lucas Faggiano appeared with a three-pointer and a dunk from Caffaro to wake up Boca. Méndez hit another three-pointer and two free throws from Aguerre calmed San Martín, with the score at 76-71 midway through the quarter. With Berra fouling out and Moreira with four fouls on the court, Boca looked to the physical power of Caffaro. With 29.2 seconds remaining, it was 81-80.
San Martín went to Méndez's penetration to finish the game, but he was well defended by Faggiano with help from Stenta. The ball came loose and Smith recovered it for the home team, who pushed the ball up the court for the final shot at the buzzer: a three-pointer and absolute pandemonium for the 83-81 victory.
